Article/lede naming[edit]

It's my contention that Jonny is commonly known as Jonny/Johnny rather than the more formal Jonathan. I have twice been reverted from adding the name Jonny/Johnny to the lede (the second time with 4 references) by Noq (talk · contribs) and we have discussed our varying interpretations of some of our WP policies here. I'd like to broaden out the discussion and suggest that either the article should be moved to Jonny Sexton or Johnny Sexton over the redirects, or the lede should have a mention of his most commonly used moniker somewhere. Any suggestions? Atlas-maker (talk) 12:36, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

His profiles on the Irish Rugby site, the Leinster site and the Lions site all call him Jonathan as his "official" name, although the Lions profile also calls him "Jonny" (which I think would be the preferred abbreviation rather than "Johnny", as there's no "h" in "Jonathan"). I would keep the article at "Jonathan Sexton", because that seems to be the primary name used by the rugby teams that he plays for, but I see no harm in including the more familiar name, which is commonly used in the media, in the article. --Nicknack009 (talk) 19:33, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have no problem with it being mentioned in the body of the article - just not in the lead. If it can be placed into context in the body then fine. noq (talk) 19:48, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
well I've no problem if you put it elsewhere either. Although normally, it is very simply done by a putting in the bold part of the lede, just as it is done on Jamie Heaslip, Jonathan Davis, Toby Faletau, Bill Clinton and thousands of others. It's a very simple and commonplace construct on WP. I just don't get your opposition to it. It doesn't fail WP:UNDUE in the same way that entire section devoted to a separate discussion on the etymology of his name might. Atlas-maker (talk) 22:02, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As an aside, I've just rewatched the Babas Hong Kong game again on Sky+, just from the point where Sexton comes on the pitch (at approx. 55 mins) and there are 2 instances where he is referred to as "Jonathan Sexton", both in on screen graphics during his kicks. There are 5 references to "Jonny (or Johnny) Sexton" in the commentary, 4 instances of usage of "Sexton" and one instance of simply "Jonny". It seems the 'official' usage IS 'Jonathan', but the common usage is Jonny. Atlas-maker (talk) 22:54, 9 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Both Jonny and Johnny should be in the first sentence of the lead, since both are frequently used by the print/web media, and both are redirects to this article. Part of the purpose of the first sentence is to assure the reader that he/she is reading the article he/she was looking for. As Atlas-maker says, it is common practice on WP to put a common nickname inside or alongside the subject's name (which may or may not be the same as the article title). In this instance, I suggest "Jonathan Sexton, also known as Jonny or Johnny Sexton..." And needless to say, refs should not be necessary. Scolaire (talk) 07:11, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'd support that. --Nicknack009 (talk) 09:06, 10 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
