Early talk[edit]

Papelbon has stated he prefers to be called Jonathan. Perhaps the page should be moved. He's not yet listed on baseball-reference.com (the closest thing the web has to a standard reference), but if he's listed there under Jonathan after the season ends I will suggest moving the page. Chick Bowen 00:58, 6 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Since I got no objections, I went ahead and moved it. Sorry for any inconvenience. Chick Bowen 14:30, 16 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Josh Papelbon link?[edit]

I removed it because this isn't his page. Hope there's no problem with that. Of course, if there is, you can restore the link...and I can remove it...and you can restore it....etc. :) -Wikitoddia 02:27, 11 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ancestry[edit]

Is he of Cajun heritage? 24.192.17.34 04:31, 16 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No, actually he is german. The name used to be Papelbaum, untill his ancestors moved to the US, and changed it to Papelbon.

Free Agent[edit]

When will he be a free agent? Right now he makes a laughable $330,000. 68.9.171.207 15:50, 18 August 2006 (UTC)Tommy[reply]

He's a rookie right now, so the Sox have him under their control for at least 5 seasons, I think. I don't know when arbitration eligibility comes into play, but the most he'll make anytime soon is a couple million before free agency kicks in, unless the Sox tie him up long term. --badlydrawnjeff talk 15:56, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's not laughable that he makes so little right now; that's the way the system works. Teams control a players' income for the first 3 years, then their salary increases as they go through a few years of arbitration, until free agency after 6 years unless the Redsox split the difference at some point and make a long-term contract pitch to him Chancat74 20:36, 17 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Place in 2007[edit]

I know he might be in the rotation in '07, but is there a source for this? I've also heard he might close again, though only if they get a top free agent starter and no better closer. Grand Slam 7 21:32, 22 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia[edit]

The trivia section (aka miscellany) needs to be incorporated into the article. Quadzilla99 17:16, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Update: Gave Trivia the correct title. Quadzilla99 01:02, 24 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody ought to add in a remark of some sort about his intimidating stare. While not an avid red sox fan, every single game I've ever happened to catch when he is pitching has included the game announcers mentioning his "evil stare" and the camera ALWAYS zooms in on his face before his stretch, something they hardly ever do for most other MLB pitchers.

Hey[edit]

someone needs to edit out the last line of garbage in the paragraph about his pitching repertoire. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikenet (talkcontribs) 03:29, August 26, 2007 (UTC)

I deleted the reference; it has no documentation and does not take into account that it is very likely this supposed pitch is simply one variation which can been tried at points past. To claim a new pitch invention after 150+ years of playing the gameis very untenable. Chancat74 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Chancat74 (talkcontribs) 20:41, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This entire article is a little... subjective? I appreciate all the information about Papelbon's pitches, but it could be written a bit more objectively. Toddbcpl 03:22, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Personality[edit]

I added a section about his personality, but someone keeps deleting it. I guess if you point out someone's faults, some fan is going to pretend they don't exist. I tried to be as fair about it as possible. Just thought I would mention it in case someone decides to write a version that Red Sox Nation approves of.

With no reliable sources, it's original research Secret sup 00:48, 2 November 2007 (UTC) please fix the line about marriage under personal - it says he is married to Kevin Youklis. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.49.143.29 (talk) 18:47, 24 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Personal Life[edit]

I'm new to this, so excuse anything I may format incorrectly, etc. I'm questioning the objectivity and the validity of the second paragraph of the "Personal Life" section, specifically the lines "...referring to his belief that, by winning the World Series..." and ending at "...Rivera's home ballpark, of Yankee Stadium." I'm also questioning if this falls under the "personal life" heading. I don't claim to be an editor on here, and if anyone else sees my point then be the one to change it, not me. I hope I did this correctly and was able to get my thought across. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.205.72.49 (talk) 02:08, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, that makes no sense to be under the 'Personal Life' section. And the New York tabloid press took his quotes out of context and made it sound like he meant something he did not. He never said "I should be the closer of the All-Star Game". It's lacking citations and totally out of place. I am removing it. Faethon Ghost (talk) 18:09, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname[edit]

Since Cinco Ocho redirects to his page, would it make sense to include something about that on this page, along with a link? Perhaps one such as this: http://blog.masslive.com/redsoxmonster/2007/07/a_look_at_this_cinco_ocho_phen.html.

I'd add it, but I feel bad supporting the silliness —Preceding unsigned comment added by Floydpink (talkcontribs) 20:09, 21 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Scouting Report[edit]

Without any citations this section is not encyclopedic. It reads like something a die-hard Papelbon fan wrote. Unless citations can be added I think it should be deleted. 66.167.108.166 (talk) 21:31, 12 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Struggles against Yankees[edit]

I do not have a complete list of Yankees who have hit walkoff or game-winning hits off of him, but I do recall Michael Kay giving a list as well as a record/ERA during one Yankees-Sox game, if anyone could find that and update it I would really appreciate it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.71.77.111 (talk) 02:13, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No offense, but I don't feel that's notable enough to warrant inclusion here. First off, Michael Kay is a shill for the Yankees. Second off, I'd be saying this if it were Mariano Rivera and his "struggles" against the Red Sox. Fact is when you face a team so much (as the Red Sox and Yankees do) the closers on each team are bound to struggle against each other sometimes. Rivera has blown a few saves against the Red Sox (I remember a few very special ones in 2004) and yes Papelbon has blown a few against the Yankees. It's baseball; it's not worth including on Papelbon's--or Rivera's--Wikipedia page. Any objections? I'd be happy to debate. --Boston Burkenation (talk) 02:17, 5 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2011 free agency[edit]

As I understand it, Papelbon is still currently a free agent even though he has agreed to terms with the Phillies. Here is what is being reported on MLB.com, with emphasis added by me:

"Jonathan Papelbon and the Phillies have agreed on a four-year contract, MLB.com confirmed on Friday. The deal, pending a physical, reportedly is worth close to $50 million. "

NYCRuss 20:53, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. It will be changed when the contract is signed and he is handed his Phillies hat and jersey by the GM at the presser. Until then, anything could happen, including Papelbon getting in a fatal car accident, the Phillies backing out, Papelbon retiring, ANYTING could happen. We saw it with Madson. I believe it is semi-protected already, however. --Boston Burkenation (talk) 20:59, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

UPDATE: I have edited the article to include what I believe is a fair and acceptable compromise, referencing the deal while maintaining his status as a current Free Agent. Any objections? disuss below. --Boston Burkenation (talk) 21:10, 11 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It's official now, so I've updated the article as such.--Giants27(T|C) 19:44, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks; I've added his uniform Number which was announced along side the signing-- he will continue to wear #58 (forgot to sign my post again. gotta stop doing that...!) --Boston Burkenation (talk) 20:55, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To-do list[edit]

Here is a "sandbox" of to-do's of how to get this article to GA status, with Go Phightins! and anyone else interested in helping. Sportsguy17 (TC) 22:00, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

First round of comments from Go Phightins![edit]

  • Lead is woefully inadequate, but it may be best to save that for the end, until we know what exactly will be in the article.
  • Sportsguy17 – I rewrote it temporarily, as it was too bad even to sit until the end of our revision.
  • Early career section has some decent content, but its presentation/format is ... sloppy and choppy – needs revision.
  • Red Sox section probably needs some subheaders
  • We need more information on his minor league career
  • The citation for the mohawk bet is not loading for me; does it work for anyone else?
  • There is a lot of emphasis on bets ... not sure what to do about that, perhaps move them into a separate "personality" section?
  • Why did he criticize Man-Ram?
  • I think we need some information on the end of his tenure with the Red Sox as well as the beginning of his tenure with the Phillies, somehow linking the two.
  • Pitching style section needs to be rewritten/reworked. I can probably help with that, as I buy Lindy's Sports preview magazines annually, each of which have scouting reports, plus we have Fangraphs and Brooks Baseball at our disposal these days.
  • The first paragraph of the personal life section might fit better in the early life section.
  • Might be better simply to intertwine the achievements into the career section when they happened – lists like that are generally frowned upon.
  • For starters, I'm going to fix up the article per his Baseball-Reference profile, since its the weekday tomorrow, I'll be limited on time, but I'll get stuff done. Sportsguy17 (TC) 23:43, 26 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, the season sections suck, as does the scouting report. I will start on the scouting report, do you want to hack through the season sections? Go Phightins! 19:26, 8 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sounds like a plan. Thanks for rewriting the lead as well, it looks a lot better. That said, if we need to copy edit it at all based on the article contents, then we will. Otherwise, I'll hack at the seasons sections. Sportsguy17 (TC) 01:01, 9 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Go Phightins!:, I've started at least reorganizing the article. I'm putting it in a format similar to that of Barry Zito, a GA I passed and could also be a good precedent of what this article should look like. I'm going to start by referencing the seasons and also create seasons sections for his Phillies stint. Hopefully this will help. Sportsguy17 (TC) 00:23, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • What a fascinating article. This will go great for a Personality section or something like that. On another note, I used several MLB pitcher GA's to start spiffing up the Minor League Career section. That section was also woefully inadequate. This is going to end up being a great article to read and I appreciate you helping. On the contrary, I apologize for doing this slowly. Like you, I'd like to get this done by Opening Day, but classes do take priority over Wikipedia, so I may not be able to edit everyday and I may do things slowly and in large chunks and I apologize for that. Sportsguy17 (TC) 01:07, 24 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proofreading[edit]

The page needs proofreading. It has some typos. I don't know why people edit things and not read what they type.

Majinsnake (talk) 06:00, 16 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@A guy saved by Jesus: So what I'm interpreting from this part of the survey is that we already have the number of saves in the infobox which is updated regularly by a number of editors, and Taffe316 faithfully keeps the 300 save club up-to-date, therefore we should just list the "300 save club" at the bottom of the page like it is now.
