Post-1971 Law Career[edit]

I don't know from where the information comes that Mr. Gartlan quit practicing law altogether when he was elected to the Virginia legislature, but I worked as a legal assistant at Melrod, Redman, & Gartlan, from about 1990 to 1992, and Mr. Gartlan showed up at the firm from time to time to see what was going on. While I did not exchange more than pleasantries with him, it was my understanding from the attorneys that he remained interested in the work of the firm that bore his name. He was the only named partner I ever met during my time there, and since I was the only "floating" legal assistant at the time, I pretty much encountered all of the attorneys at one point or another. I'm pretty sure he was listed as "of Counsel" on the firm letterhead, which generally means retired, but he wasn't completely out of the picture as the other named partners seem to have been (they may not have even still been alive for all I know). I left for graduate school in mid-1992, and the firm ceased to exist in 1993. Nice place to work. Kelelain (talk) 22:39, 14 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
