Please don't add copyrighted content to the article[edit]

In my most recent edit to the article, I removed a summary of his high school accomplishments that looked like it had been copied and pasted from MLB.com. It is ok to paraphrase this (citing proper sources) according to Wikipedia style; but please do not add copyrighted content to the article.

"Tater" vs. "home run"[edit]

An anon has been changing the description of Hamilton's first home run from "home run" to "tater". I am reverting this because "tater" is a slang term, and slang is not appropriate for encyclopedic articles. "Ham Bone"?[edit]

Can someone find a reliable source for the "Ham Bone" nickname? I looked for it on Google a few days ago and didn't find much. Wikipedia should not be used as a vehicle for making nicknames catch on. --Idont Havaname (Talk) 03:59, 14 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It says on his stats that he has 9 1/2 home runs ([User:Timothy Chappell])

On July 4th, 2007, Hamilton struck out 46 times in the same game, against the San Francisco Giants. The following day, in the series closer of the Reds and Giants, Hamilton hit his 140th home run of the 2007 season, in the 6th inning with 2 outs, enhancing the Reds lead over the Giants to 66-2.

I know it doesn't matter what I say. But I can ASSURE you, as a citizen of DFW, 'J-Ham and Hambone" are nicknames for him. Most of the time you hear them during live broadcasts. There's no real way to link to that is there? Kind of a flaw in the system. This article is in serious need of cleanup as it is largely unreadable. There are run-on sentences, other sentences that begin an idea but never finish, and unrelated thoughts in the same paragraph. All I want to do is clarify that he appeared in the home run derby in 2008. Unlike these articles, time keeps flowing. 365 days from now, someone may read this article and think it's a current event without a date. PUT DATES ON YOUR ARTICLES PEOPLE. 28 home runs[edit]

Hi. Last night, at Yankee Stadium in New York, there was a Home Run Derby. Josh Hamilton set a new record for most home runs (28) in one round. He also set the second most home runs in one home run derby (35, the record is 41), and three of the top several farthest home runs (<500 ft), so please add this information. Mr. Hamilton,

After reading your story in guide post, I felt compelled to write you. I'm sure you hear this every day, but my daughter is currently going through the same addition problem you were once faced with.

She has been in numerous re-habs and has stolen over $40,000.00 from us, her parents. She is currently serving time in prison and is expected to be released Sept. 2nd. 2009. We had wrote her off as your family wrote you off. We are now faced with deciding where she could live. We are going to help her live in a home called The Rebecca Home.(Another Re-hab place)

We such as your parents raised her well. I coached all of her softball teams and took her to church every Sunday. My wife taught all of her Sunday school classes. Even with a good up bringing. She still met evil ones that corrupted her with false promises of they loved her more than her family. It seemed every thing we tried would not help. We constantly supported her and she always went back to cocaine.

I never thought this would happen to my family, but it did. I will be sharing your guide post story with my daughter. We will pray for you and please pray for our daughter, Lisa!

Narron and Hamilton[edit]

I've added info about Narron being part of Hamilton's support system and, as such, how it would include a confidentiality agreement between the two parties as what is expected based on other recovery programs. The concept of calling Narron a liar when, as a matter of day to day business people lie to the press or refuse to give solid answers to protect key information all the time, seems petty.Red3biggs (talk) 19:45, 27 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That section is edging very close to original research, and away from a neutral point of view. Saying someone is part of a generic support system in a first person interview is different from being part of a structured program. It could and im probably not the person to write it to be honest. I think it is not a neutral point of view to call Narron a liar either when, based on the relationship we do know about Narron (he is a part of Hamilton's support system, and Hamilton MUST be accountable to those in his support system) that he is unable to disclose any information Hamilton gives to him in confidence. If the web site had asked Jon Daniels and JD had answered with "The Rangers do not keep tabs of players off field activities as long as they remain within the law. Josh is under a strict program due to his past problems and at no point did he break the rules" would the web site say the rangers were liars and covering up for him? (some may disagree with this example, but i would expect my employer to keep my personal information confidential just as my work expects me to keep certain information about them confidential, and when it gets down to it that is a very simple understanding of Narron and Hamilton's relationship. This has bounced back and forth the last few days. Any objections to renaming this section, possibly something like 'Arizona Nightclub Incident' or 'Deadspin photos' etc - so we don't have to go back and forth on whether a relapse means drugs or alcohol? It's not ready for GA yet. It passes most of the Good Article Criteria but I think the section on the night club incident needs to be cut down to one paragraph. Nicknames[edit]

It seems to be rearing its head again. I also imagine it is only going to get worse in the next few days. I think nicknames have a place in any article - but if the lead is supposed to summarize the key points about Hamilton's life and career - there is no need to have four nicknames in the second sentence. Contradiction (or not clear)?[edit]

Hi there - I'm completely ignorant as to making actual edits but I thought I would chime in on something in case someone agreed and thought an edit necessary. It seems awkward and perhaps even contradictory to to have the sentence "Hamilton says he hasn't used drugs or alcohol since October 6, 2005" followed only a couple paragraphs later by the "Nightclub Incident". Agreed. That may make it a bit more elegant. Perhaps instead of "Hamilton says..." using something along the lines of "On xx.xx.xxxx(date) Hamilton said..." I think maybe it's the ongoing present tense of the word "says" that makes it feel a little wonky to me. Significant Typo Under Addictions and Recovery[edit]

Josh's parents[edit]

comment about casting crowns[edit]

The article comments that Hamilton comes out to bat to the song "Until the whole world hears" by Casting Crowns. The footnote links to an article from 2009 which says he comes to bat to a song by Phillips Craig and Dean. I am not sure what he comes out to now, but in any case the footnote does not support the claim. drug addiction is a big deal[edit]

OK, I don't know much about baseball. Like many people who don't know much I heard his name attached to the four home run game. And all of the discussion about how he was traded for next to nothing and how he had a bad drug addiction that kept him out of the majors for years.

So I come here to find out more.

And the article talks all about it... er... that is ALL AROUND IT.

Why even bother referencing it unless you want to document it? He had an addiction to what? Aspirin? Tylenol? Crack? Heroin? Pot? There is one implication that he might have been asking for cocaine but that's hearsay and not even really something that should be in an encyclopedia. Hey, someone told me that he wanted to be King of England. Should we put that in too?

How about documenting the facts? He was out of the majors due to addiction to X. Say it. I agree it's a bit lacking and disjointed. The specific sections says only "Hamilton's struggles with drugs and alcohol are well documented. He finally got clean after being confronted by his grandmother, Mary Holt.[59] In May 2008 Hamilton said he had not used drugs or alcohol since October 6, 2005.[2]" about his active addiction, and then focuses on his time since getting clean. There's a little info in the "Early career" section, but it's buried in baseball talk.
