Article name[edit]

I have moved this article back to KGMB from KGMB-TV. Consensus on both WP:NC#Broadcasting and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Television_Stations#Article_names is that the article name should reflect the actual call letters of the TV station. As can be seen here: [1] the call letters for this station are in fact KGMB. Any concerns regarding this topic would be best addressed here: Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Television_Stations. —A 04:53, 19 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Adding unreferenced entries of former employees to lists containing BLP material[edit]

Hello, Please do not add unreferenced names as entries to the list of former employees in articles. Including this type of material in articles does not abide by current consensus and its inclusion is strongly discouraged in our policies and guidelines. The rationales are as follows:

  1. WP:NOT tells us, Wikipedia is "not an indiscriminate collection of information." As that section describes, just because something is true, doesn't necessarily mean the info belongs in Wikipedia.
  2. As per WP:V, we cannot include information in Wikipedia that is not verifiable and sourced.
  3. WP:Source list tells us that lists included within articles (including people's names) are subject to the same need for references as any other information in the article.
  4. Per WP:BLP, we have to be especially careful about including un-sourced info about living persons.

If you look at articles about companies in general, you will not find mention of previous employees, except in those cases where the employee was particularly notable. Even then, the information is not presented just as a list of names, but is incorporated into the text itself (for example, when a company's article talks about the policies a previous CEO had, or when they mention the discovery/invention of a former engineer/researcher). If a preexisting article is already in the encyclopedia for the person you want to add to a list, it's generally regarded as sufficient to support their inclusion in list material in another article. cheers Deconstructhis (talk) 06:07, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello fellow Wikipedians,

I have just added archive links to one external link on KGMB. Please take a moment to review my edit. If necessary, add {{cbignore}} after the link to keep me from modifying it. Alternatively, you can add {{nobots|deny=InternetArchiveBot}} to keep me off the page altogether. I made the following changes:

Origin of the KGMB call sign[edit]

I removed "George M. Bowls (KGMB's first chief engineer)" from the "call sign meaning" field in the KGMB Infobox, because the overwhelming evidence is that the KGMB-TV call letter assignment was chosen because it matched then-sister station KGMB (now KSKK). Moreover, KGMB (AM) had received its call sign randomly from an alphabetical list of available call letters as a new station grant in 1929, thus was not linked to any individual.

Overall, I could not find any evidence of the existence of a "George Bowls" (or "Bowles") associated with Hawaiian radio. In fact, it appears the erroneous attribution is the result of confusing KGMB with radio station KGB in San Diego (now KLSD), which changed its call letters from KFBC to KGB in 1928, and was named after a real George Bowles, who was KGB's manager.

Going back to the original KGMB (AM), in December 1929 this call sign was issued to a new Honolulu station owned by the Honolulu Broadcasting Company. In cases where a licensee didn't request a specific call sign, Federal Radio Commission staff just assigned one at random from an alphabetic list. Reviewing the three western broadcasting stations authorized during this month ("New Stations", Radio Service Bulletin, December 31, 1929, page 4), you have:

  • KGMB Honolulu, Hawaii
  • KGMC Jerome, Arizona
  • KGMD Roswell, New Mexico.

Also, the next month included new stations KGME through KGMO. ("New Stations", Radio Service Bulletin, January 31, 1930, page 2.)

So, to recap:

  1. The original KGMB (AM) in Honolulu got its call in 1929 randomly from an alphabetical list.
  2. KGMB-TV's call letter assignment in 1952 was chosen to match its then-sister station KGMB (AM)
  3. The supposed "George Bowls" attribution for KGMB appears to be the result of confusing KGMB with KGB in San Diego, which really was named after a George Bowles, who was KGB's manager.--Thomas H. White (talk) 11:31, 28 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
