JOHN EDEN Vs BILL McLAUGHLAN?[edit]

A question: Was there a known feud between John Eden, one of 3DB's most popular and longest-serving broadcasters, and journalist and writer Bill McLaughlan? I'd love to hear from anyone with further information or comments.

My reason for asking the question is based on the fact that John Eden is virtually written out of McLaughlan's 1985 history of the station, FROM WIRELESS TO RADIO - THE 3DB STORY.

The Foreword to the book is written by former iconic Sun News-Pictorial columnist Keith Dunstan. Inter alia, Dunstan lists some of the great names at DB: "... George Edwards who was quite capable of taking 10 parts in one radio serial, Eric Welsh who became the greatest name in racing, Eric Pearce, Maurie Callard, Dan Webb, Jack Perry, Dick Cranbourne, Doug Entwistle, Renn Millar, Charlie Vaude and, ah yes, John Eden. It was always quite impossible to face the day without having it straightened out first by John Eden." In other words, Dunstan names some of 3DB's greatest personalities but singles out three for special mention. Now, radio serial doyen, George Edwards, was actually a Sydneysider who worked with a number of stations including 3DB's Major Network sister, 2UE, as well as 2CH and 2GB. However, most radio historians would agree that Eric Welsh and John Eden were amongst DB's most popular personalities, and that John Eden deserves that sentence to himself in the brief Foreword.

Nevertheless, author Bill McLauglan would have had little influence on what Kieth Dunstan wrote. That being said, McLaughlan virtually ignores John Eden in the actual text! In the chapter All Voices Bright and Beautiful, McLaughlin list most of 3DB's earlier breakfast presenters: John ('Sylvester John') Devine, Vernon ('Daybreak Dan') Sellars, John ('Daybreak Dan') Stuart [arguably the second-most important voice to cover the breakfast spot and certainly a well-loved person in other programs], Dan ('Danny') Webb. By doing this, McLaughlan makes it clear that he is ignoring a much-revered personality who actually hosted the breakfast program for a remarkable, record-breaking run of over 25 years. Eden was also well-known for a number of other DB daytime programs, particularly Sing-Along and other sessions that he co-hosted with Geoff McComas (who, incidentally, gets the mention that he deserves, in McLauglan's book).

Of course, Eden is fondly remembered for his assiduous work for the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal with which 3DB was associated for many decades (as was its successor 3TT [3TTT, TT-FM]). In McLaughlan's chapter, The Appeal That's Never Turned Down, one finds the only mention of Eden, albeit brief, where John Eden is referred to the assistant to one-time appeal director, Jeff Crouch. This may technically correct but appears to be a put-down.

The book is dotted with photos, some personalities appearing in up to a dozen pictures. The only photos of John Eden appear in the chapter on the Royal Children's Hospital Appeal and he always appears incidentally with other people. I am particularly amused by one photo in which the caption appears to be skewed to denigrate Eden - this is a photo of John Eden, fellow 3DB personality Lawrence Costin, and a young hospital patient. The three of them have broad smiles on their faces and, to me, it looks as if they're about to make a 'high five' hand-clap. McLaughlin (deliberately?) misinterprets Eden's hand action in his caption: "John Eden dosn't (sic.) seem to need Lawrence Costin's help as he meets a young patient at the Royal Children's Hospital".

Now, let me make it quite clear that I'm not related to John Eden and, in fact, I never met the man. However, I would count myself amongst the hundreds of thousands (perhaps millions) of fans that he had accumulated in an incredible 30 years with 3DB.

It is hard to call McLaughlin's book a serious history of 3DB, not only because he has virtually written out one of the station's most popular and important personalities, but also because of many other serious contradictions and errors of fact.

I started this somewhat long note by asking if anyone can add any light to what appears to have been an Eden Vs McLauglin feud. Oh, how I hope that someone can add something!
