Possible cause[edit]

The aircraft possibly crashed due to CO poisoning of the crew. A number of DC-4's had crashed due to initially 'unknown causes' but after post-mortem of the recovered bodies they were discovered to have high concentrations of carbon monoxide in their bloodstreams. Passenger aircraft of the time used fuel-burning heaters for cabin heating and if ventilation of the heaters became obstructed could lead to poisoning of the passengers and crew.
