Royal Warrant instituting the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal[edit]

Following is the text from THE LONDON GAZETTE, 23 AUGUST, 1912 Page 6282. I put it here because there are differences between the warrant and the article page. I am not qualified to write up a correct article. There are interesting differences between the images referred to in the article and the description in the text. THE LONDON GAZETTE, 23 AUGUST, 1912 Page 6282 India Office, August 23, 1912.

ROYAL WARRANT of 10th April, 1900, instituting the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal, as amended by Royal Warrants of 8th July, 1901, and 9th July, 1912. Whereas We, taking into Our Royal consideration that there do not exist adequate means whereby We can reward important and useful services rendered to Us in Our Indian Empire in the advancement of the public interests of Our said Empire, and taking also into consideration the expediency of distinguishing such services by some mark of Our Royal favour: Now for the purpose of attaining an end so desirable as that of thus distinguishing such services aforesaid, We have instituted and created, and by these presents for Us, Our Heirs and Successors, do institute, and create a new Decoration - to be designated as hereinafter described, - and We are graciously pleased to make, ordain, and; establish the following Rules and Ordinances, for the government of the same which shall from henceforth be inviolably observed and kept. Firstly. - It is ordained that this Decoration shall henceforth be styled and designated "The Kaisar-I -Hind Medal for Public Service in India." Secondly. - It is ordained that any person, without distinction of race, occupation, position, or sex, shall be eligible for this Decoration who shall have distinguished himself (or herself) by important and useful service in the advancement of the public interest in India. Thirdly. - It is ordained that there shall be two classes of the Decoration to be styled respectively "The Kaisar-i-Hind Medal for Public Service in India" of the First Class and "The Kaisar-i-Hind Medal for Public Service in India" of the Second Class. Fourthly. - It is ordained that awards of the Medal of the First Class shall be made by Us, Our Heirs and Successors, and such awards shall only be made on a recommendation to Us by Our Secretary of State for India. Fifthly. - It is ordained that awards of the Medal of the Second Class shall be made by Our Governor-General of India for the time being. Sixthly. - It is ordained that the Medal shall consist of an oval-shaped Badge or Decoration - in gold for the First Class and in silver for the Second Class - with the Royal Cypher of Ourselves, Our Heirs, and Successors in the centre on one side and on the reverse the words "Kaisar-i-Hind, for Public Service in India," and that it shall be suspended on the left breast by a dark blue ribbon. Seventhly. - It is ordained that the names of those persons to whom a Medal of either Class may be awarded shall be published in the " Gazette of India," and in the Gazette of the Local Government under the jurisdiction of which the service was rendered, and shall be entered in all Civil and Official lists, and that a registry of such names shall be kept in the Office of the Foreign Department of the Government of India. Eighthly. - It is ordained that if any one, after having received either of the Medals, again renders such service as, if he had not received such Medal, would have entitled him to it, such further service shall be recorded by a bar attached to the ribbon by which the Medal is suspended; and for every such additional service an additional bar may be added. Ninthly. - In order to make such additional provisions as shall effectually preserve pure this honourable Decoration, it is ordained that if any person on whom the Medal of the First Class is conferred be guilty of any crime or disgraceful conduct which in Our judgment disqualifies him for the same, his name shall, by an especial Warrant under Our Sign Manual, to be countersigned by one of Our Principal Secretaries of State, be forthwith erased from the list of those upon whom the said Decoration shall have been conferred, and his Medal forfeited and returned to Us, Our Heirs and Successors; and in the case of those who have been awarded Medals of the Second Class, such erasure of their names from the lists of those upon whom the said Decoration shall have been conferred and forfeiture of their Medals shall be effected under the Order of Our Governor-General of India for the time being, to whom their Medals shall be returned. And every person to whom the said Medal is given shall, before receiving the same, enter into an engagement to return the same if his name shall be erased as aforesaid. Provided that We, Our Heirs and Successors, shall at all times have power to restore the Medal of the First Class to any person who may have been deprived of it when circumstances render such restoration just and expedient, and that in like circumstances Our Governor-General of India for the time being shall have power by his Order to restore the Medal of the Second Class, to any person who may have been deprived of it. Lastly. - We reserve to Ourselves, our Heirs and Successors, full power of annulling, altering, abrogating, augmenting, interpreting, or dispensing with these regulations or any part thereof by a notification under Our Royal Sign Manual.

Name[edit]

In referencing the Royal Warrant as copy and pasted by another editor above, or viewing here [1]. The name of the medal as listed in the article is " The Kaisar-i-Hind Medal for Public Service in India." Kaisar-i-Hind means "Emperor of India" in the vernacular of the Hindi and Urdu languages. Now since we tend to use common names wouldn't it make more sense for this article to be titled Kaisar-i-Hind Medal? Cheers. EricSerge (talk) 19:09, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Recipients section[edit]

In looking at pages of other awards, this section should be renamed to "Notable recipients" and those who do not meet notability criteria or lack a reliable source reference be removed. This seems to be a "best practice". They could be moved to the talk page until such a time as a reliable source is found or they are found to meet notability guidelines. As it stands, this list is not very useful or encyclopedic. I welcome constructive input on this matter. EricSerge (talk) 15:29, 18 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
