Improvements

I propose to identify and make changes to get the Kaiwaka entry up to GA or A grade. This has been suggested by a local community meeting Kaiwaka Can. I would like to collect some ideas about how the page might be improved.

Suggestions:

• Add picture illustrating the 'little town of lights' tag i.e of some of the illuminations. The fire station one is good.
• Add paragraph and picture about Eutopia Cafe - this is a notable building and a reason many people stop in the town.
• Add paragraph about Jaques Four Square - which will be 100 years old in 2024 - Pioneers Frank and Ella Jaques established the general store in 1924 which their five sons have run ever since. 50 years as a four square. https://www.nzherald.co.nz/northern-advocate/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503446&objectid=11946227
• Mention the local paper The Bugle which has been going since 1978.
• Should the peaks Pukekororo and Baldrock be included here? - they don't have their own pages.

On the name Kaiwaka

• The reference to the name 'eating a canoe' seems problematic. The source - 1000 placenames dictionary https://nzhistory.govt.nz/culture/maori-language-week/1000-maori-place-names seems to have word rather than meaning translations and needs checking against local Te reo Māori speakers. My understanding is that it better translates as food canoe which may reference that Kaiwaka represents a portage route between the Kaipara harbour in the west and Mangawhai in the East.

The reference to clouds could be better explained. This source: https://maoridictionary.co.nz/search?idiom=&phrase=&proverb=&loan=&histLoanWords=&keywords=kaiwaka gives:

1. (noun) threatening clouds (on the horizon).

He kapua pōuri ngā kaiwaka kei runga i te paerangi. He tohu aituā tēnei (Te Ara 2015). / Kaiwaka are threatening clouds on the horizon. This a sign of misfortune.

However, we don't yet have a citeable link to whether one or both of these meanings is the source of the name of the town.

It would be great if you could improve the article. A few comments:

1. I think you should include Pukekorero and Baldrock in this article, as most such small hills aren't sufficiently notable to have their own articles. If you find enough material, either could be spun off into a separate article later.
2. Any historical postcard art would have to be copyright expired, and copyright law is not fun to decipher, in my experience.
3. I could take some pictures next week if that would be helpful
4. I agree that the translation given by the Minstry of Culture and Heritage site for "Kaiwaka" is odd. Kia ora: Kaiwaka is a possible source giving two reasonable interpretations of the name. I also don't see a problem with citing the Māori Dictionary entry. We have the template {{cite dictionary}} for a reason.
