Not sure on a statement[edit]

Misfit Toys, where did you get the information that he "Likely topped 300 pounds"??

I've revised it a bit to note the discrepancies between the officially listed weights of other heavy umpires and their actual weights. I also noted the difference between Kaiser's HS weight of 260 (noted in his book) and his listed weight of 200-220 from 1977-82. I think it's important to include the info, which reflects the demonstrated inaccuracy of the official numbers. MisfitToys 22:41, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

What is with the one sided viewpoint?[edit]

Kingbotk or whomever else is anonymously editing this, please stop focusing on the weight point. It is making this article from the point of view that he was a bad umpire, and the fact he was overweight was a huge problem (no pun intended).

You and I are the only contributors to the article thus far (no anons yet), and I've not added anything since making some changes in response to your question. Certainly other additions to the article related to his field work are welcome, but the weight issue was significant in his career. Besides, he was voted the worst AL umpire in 1999, so it's not particularly my point of view but that of the players. If there are sources citing him as a good umpire, they deserve to be mentioned as well. MisfitToys 23:36, 30 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that strikes me as trying to interpret the results of the poll in a way that tends to make an opposing argument; whether or not the poll resulted from more personal biases is something we can't begin to speculate about here. I'd also note that he was never a crew chief for any postseason series, which tends to work against any suggestion that he was particularly excellent. Also, it seems to me that most baseball people actually liked him personally (he held a big annual charity fundraiser in Rochester, which was apparently always drew well), so negative assessments were probably based more on his field work than on his personality.
