Growth claims[edit]

I have removed a variety of claims of future growth because they are uncited and anyway Wikipedia is not a crystal ball. The claims are:

  • "Northamptonshire is the UK's 4th fastest growing county and Kettering is a significant contributor to this growth. "
  • "[The population] is expected to rise significantly over the next 15 years."
  • "North Northamptonshire...is expected to deliver about 52,000 new homes and 43,800 new jobs over the period 2001–2021 and a further 28,000 new houses in the following decade..."
  • "The borough of Kettering is due to see 13,100 new houses built during that period, with further thousands of houses thereafter. .... Given the housing expansion elsewhere in Northamptonshire the county, the 4th fastest growing in the UK, will see at least 145,000 new houses constructed by 2031, increasing its population by 50%." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.167.181.33 (talk) 20:03, 24 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tagging[edit]

The article has been written in good faith, but has been tagged for one or more issues. This is in no way intended as a criticism, and should be regarded as flagging of areas that need attention. Although it might be fine for a book, the tone of prose has not quite achieved the neutrality of style required for an encylopedia, and much of the article, in particular the exceptionally long history section needs rewriting. Northamptonshire Wikipedians may also be able to help improve this article by copyediting and restructuring a rewritten article. It's always a good idea to compare articles like these with with the structures of those on other small towns such as for example, Malvern, Worcestershire.--Kudpung (talk) 15:16, 5 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I was tempted to remove {{Essay-like}}, but I will leave it to those who edit the article more regularly. It reads OK to me, and recent edits may have helped this issue. So many town articles suffer from neglect, so a thorough treatment is welcome to me. Certainly good ideas can be obtained from other articles, but I see no need to put all small-town articles in the same mold. The tag mars the article, and at this point the need doesn't seem pressing enough for more than a note on the talk page. Bob Burkhardt (talk) 14:42, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. Since it was tagged there's been a big collaborative effort to give this article a face lift over the last few days. Tag removed.--Kudpung (talk) 17:23, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pipewell abbey[edit]

This was already on the page with several wrong facts. Didn't know whether to rectify or delete so I rectified. Not only had I never heard of it but Pipewell is much closer to Corby than Kettering. How far is too far from Kettering for it to be mentioned? Boughton house obviously needs to be mentioned (and is) but what about Triangular lodge and the Eleanor Cross?

Both the latter probably need brief mentions, especially as Eleanor Cross is no further away than RAF Grafton UnderwoodGrev02 (talk) 10:56, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Photo[edit]

Has ANYONE got a better photo of Kettering than the dingy litter strewn mess that's up at the minute? It must be the ugliest town pic on wikipedia! If not I'll take one myself, but I won't be back in Kettering for another 4 weeks.Grev02 (talk) 11:12, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I went into town this morning with exactly that intention :). I only managed a shot of the parish church before an accident with a six-year-old and a bottle of ribena and failing weather prevented me from getting any more. I will be able to get some more (or even of the surrounding area) after Monday. Perhaps we should start a wishlist. --TheSmuel (talk) 15:47, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The Parish church is the only obvious one off the top of my head. The Market place was full of holes the last time I was there while they build that new eyesore in the middle of it. Council offices? Wickstead Park? Somewhere in the shopping area that doesn't look a mess?! What about the pedestrianised area by the side of the library/parish church - might look pretty good in pics. The library looks good in autumn when the ivy turns crimson. Does the article need Kettering's coat of arms? If so where do we get it from?Grev02 (talk) 23:01, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've checked through 100s of pics on Geograph but I couldn't find anything suitable. I guess any photos Kettering Wijipedians can make will be much better.--Kudpung (talk) 19:57, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

History[edit]

I don't want to add any more inline tags to the article because they make it look ugly. So, according to WP:WEASEL#Examples I've removed this sentence to here: indeed it is believed that up to and for some time after the Domesday Book iron-smelting continued in the adjacent Rockingham Forest area. Perhaps it can be rephrased (if a verifiable reference can be supplied). There a re a couple more in the text too, if someone could go through and rephrase them, providing the necessary references. --Kudpung (talk) 19:57, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If the history section needs shortening then I think Pipewell Abbey is a candidate for being cut; if anything it should be included on Corby's entry as it's much closer.Grev02 (talk) 18:12, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
OK, we'll park it here to use later in Corby:
At the nearby hamlet of Pipewell once stood Pipewell Abbey, founded for Cistercian monks in 1143 by William Butevilain. which was dissolved in 1538 by Henry VIII's Dissolution. The only remains of the abbey are earthworks located on private farm land although an elaborately carved wooden rood screen was relocated to Brigstock church, where it can still be seen.

8th USAF[edit]

Slimmed down - the entire history of USAF units stationed in Kettering during WW2 is not needed.--Kudpung (talk) 22:05, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Boughton House[edit]

I've put back the reference to 'English Versailles' (with a source) as Boughton house is so lavish that it isn't just another run of the mill stately home and I think the entry should reflect this.Grev02 (talk) 18:12, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fine. Any chance of getting a picture of it?--Kudpung (talk) 21:16, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This is on my to-do list for this week :). I'm back in Kettering on Tuesday and plan to visit. --TheSmuel (talk)

Parish Church[edit]

Parish church entry now makes no sense. Either the whole incident featuring De Crophill should be cut or the whole thing needs rewriting or reinstating.Grev02 (talk) 18:12, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cut. It was a difficult story to follow anyway and not really of encyclopedic value. Please remove Greenall p.21 if it no longer applies to this incident.--Kudpung (talk) 21:14, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Newton[edit]

I've rewritten the villages involved to make it clear that the three named were not the only villages taking part, and that Weldon supplied a larger contingent of men than the others. The way it had been edited read as if these were the only three villages taking part - it was called the Newton Rebellion, not the kettering, corby and weldon rebellion.Grev02 (talk) 19:46, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Fine - you are after all one of the major resident experts on local knowledge here and other editors can only help improve the style and readablity. Keep up the good work :)

Not notable?[edit]

I have removed the following entry until notability can be substantiated, rewritten in encyclopedic prose, and references provided:
Dougie Bridgeman, a local man, but proud Welshman, has in recent years had a similar profound effect on the club's fortunes. Returning to Kettering after a period of playing 1st Class Rugby this talented centre led the 1st XV successfully for years and now mixes playing duties with those of Club Coach. His skills and knowledge contributing greatly to the 1st XV's successes in recent years.

Overlinking[edit]

There is nearly as much blue print as black print in this article. This is excessive overlinking of common nouns, is not particularly helpful to readers, and finally make the page look untidy. Overlinking will be removed, and if the contributor(s) persist(s), they will risk being banned for vandalism.--Kudpung (talk) 08:08, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I can see that you mean there is alot a blue links which are not needed.Likelife (talk) 14:31, 19 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Class[edit]

Is Kettering relly still Start Class on WikiProject Northants?, Im not so sure...Likelife (talk) 18:47, 17 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kettering General Hospital[edit]

Ive made a page on Kettering General Hospital but can't find a image does someone have a image I could use for the lead image?Likelife (talk) 14:18, 26 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flooding[edit]

Is there a need for the information on the 2007 flooding? We also had flooding in previous years that cost substantial amounts of money. Antisora 11:20, 11 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes there is a need, I knew nothing about it until just now. Is that chip butty place near the George Hotel still going? Totnesmartin 08:45, 10 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Saxon Agles[edit]

Not "Saxon" Angles.

Kettering never had a "Saxon" settlement or a "Saxon" burial ground - they were Angles, different tribe, different pottery.90.194.182.44 (talk) 23:44, 31 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
