Khan, Khagan, Hakan[edit]

Khanate, is for the country ruled by a Khan. Khaganate, is a country ruled by a Khagan. The article fails to make distinction between Khan and Khagan. Same issue for Khanate and Khaganate. These are different titiles and states. In the very beginin of the article, "Kağanlık" is used as the Turkish word meaning "Khanate". This is wrong. In Turkish there are two words: "Hanlık", "Kağanlık".

"Han" is "Khan" and "Hanlık" for "Khanate". "Kağan" is for "Khagan" and "Kağanlık" for "Khaganate".

In the other hand, "Hakan" is not "Khagan". It is a third distinct title compared to "Han" and "Kağan". and there is "Hakanlık" as a third distinct form of government compared to "Hanlık" and "Kağanlık".

Therefore, titles, regimes and their English equivalents are as follows:

Han = Khan; Hanlık = Khanate Kağan = Khagan; Kağanlık = Khaganate Hakan = Hakan; Hakanlık = <N.A.>

On the other hand, where does "-ate" come from? Why is it not "Khandom" as in "Kingdom", according to rules of English language? I suggest "Khandom", "Khagandom" and "Hakandom". --76.31.238.174 (talk) 20:45, 12 December 2011 (UTC) - I don't know where the "-ate" suffix comes from - maybe by analogy with emirate? In any case, "<title of ruler>-dom" is not universal in English, even for English/European polities. We have counties, principalities, empires, and bishoprics (rather than countdoms, princedoms, emperordoms, and bishopdoms). Iapetus (talk) 16:41, 13 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Khanate is a Mongolian-originated word[edit]

Khagan#Origin: The title was first seen in a speech between 283 and 289, when the Mongolic Xianbei chief Tuyuhun tried to escape from his younger stepbrother Murong Hui, and began his route from the Liaodong Peninsula to the areas of Ordos Desert.
