Village bypass? When?[edit]

The article currently states "The village lies on the line of an eighteenth-century military road between Stirling and Balloch, although a bypass around the village was built in 1971 meaning Kippen no longer lies on the A811."

Unfortunately this is not quite correct. The FIRST bypass was already very old in 1971 when indeed the SECOND bypass was built on the trackbed of the old railway, as a result of severe weight restrictions placed on the Broich Bridge, which is what was being bypassed this time! There was, and probably still is, something resembling a Bailey bridge superimposed on the old Broich bridge. I know this from memory, even saw the new bypass being built, and suffered serious inconvenience in my first car at the Broich bridge, but the various generations of OS map at maps.nls.uk will confirm it was as I said. The 25000 map around 1960) shows a straight A811 from the crossroads near Kippen station to almost the Broich bridge, exactly as I remember it. That also seems to be true in 1887.

I have not updated this yet, as I would prefer that someone with more complete knowledge of dates etc did it, so that it is finally correct. Was the Broich bridge built especially for the first bypass, and when? Tiger99 (talk) 20:29, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Name[edit]

"The name is believed to come from Scottish Gaelic, ceapan, meaning 'place of the little stump', 'outcrop' or 'block'." https://www.definitions.net/definition/kippen Perhaps someone in Scotland has further insight into this? Heavenlyblue (talk) 18:41, 12 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
