Length[edit]

The Characters and Synopsis sections of this article seem too lengthy and detailed for an encyclopedia. I've also clarified with an "essay" tag. I don't know whether it would be appropriate to create an article called "Analysis of Krapp's Last Tape," so maybe someone with more time available could do some summarizing. Each of Beckett's works with its own idividual entry on Wikipedia has an absurdly long, rambling synopsis. This completely defeats the purpose of having a synopsis in the first place, the reader may as well read the text! It's screaming for some judicious editing, by someone as knowledgeable but (hopefully) less verbose... less is more. would be better if it was shorter. --Mdukas (talk) 15:53, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Original research[edit]

I've done some format cleaning up of citations, deleted copyright-violating site links, etc. (see editing history summaries), but the problem of violations of WP:NOR remains; this article still needs a lot of cutting and further work to be in keeping with WP:V#Sources, WP:CITE, WP:Reliable sources, and WP:NOR. --NYScholar 03:05, 23 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Cendres.jpg[edit]

Image:Cendres.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

The first paragraph in the section headed Characters contains factual errors. It refers to something Beckett allegedly told "the actor Laurence Harvey." This is undoubtedly a mistake for the Dartmouth professor Lawrence [not Laurence] Harvey, a friend of Beckett and author of an important book on his work; Beckett probably never met the actor. Note 24 seems to confirm that it was the professor, not the actor: it says, "Undated interview with Lawrence [sic] Harvey," and cites as its source James Knowlson's biography of Beckett, pp. 371, 372. However, the words quoted in the article do not appear on those pages of Knowlson's biography. In an e-mail to me, Knowlson said there are so many things wrong with this paragraph that he didn't know where to begin. However, this sentence should be deleted since the reference to Harvey (with a link to the Laurence Harvey article) and the Knowlson citation are both flat wrong. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.171.197.116 (talk) 19:10, 16 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Link to clips of film[edit]

On 4 October 2006 I added to this entry a link to YouTube clips of a cinema version of Krapp's Last Tape directed by Tom Skipp, which I found to be a useful information to be displayed as "external links" for the entry on the play: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Krapp%27s_Last_Tape&diff=prev&oldid=79536923

The links were then removed by NYScholar claiming links to sites with copyright violations: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Krapp%27s_Last_Tape&diff=159720651&oldid=159720561 I don't think there is such violation (see below), but, anyway: NYScholar referred to WP:COPYVIO and, as far as I can tell, the WP notice refers to material used as content in entry, not to links to external material: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:COPYVIO

Can someone clarify this point?

I then also observe a subsequent dispute about these links between MusicMaker5376 (who removes links on the basis of similar claims) and Estrellasonora (who adds them back, presents himself as the author of the film and gives evidence of approval of the use of the play by the play copyright's owners): http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Krapp%27s_Last_Tape&diff=168571543&oldid=168567519 http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Krapp%27s_Last_Tape&diff=168594302&oldid=168582892 http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Krapp%27s_Last_Tape&diff=172773563&oldid=172765600

As far as I can tell, the links provided in the first instance refer to short clips from a film in which bits of the play are quoted. I believe they should stay. If this is not possible, could someone please explain why?

The links, for information:

Please, clarification needed on this issue.

I added a link not to the clips but to the press kit / presentation of this film work. Typewritten (talk) 16:27, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The reason these links were removed, and I think it's talked about in WP:EL (I don't really have the time right now to hunt down the exact place), is that WP can't publish information that violates a copyright, nor can they LINK PEOPLE TO something that may or may not violate someone's copyright. I was removing the links based upon that policy. Since we can't verify that the editor linking to the videos has any status as a copyright holder, we can't link to the sites. If the question can't be answered, we have to err on the side of caution. I'm removing the links above, and will be removing them from the article. —  MusicMaker5376 18:15, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, as a link to the press kit, I think it's okay. Having a link to the press kit is a little different: linking to YouTube gives no information other than the clip. Linking to the press kit demonstrates that whomever supplies the video is the production company noted in the kit, who obviously have the rights to do so. —  MusicMaker5376 18:21, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I understand the "no links to YouTube" as a precautionary principle (although further examination of the case could clarify the copyright issue and the legitimacy of "clip-as-quote" position). I also believe that the current link is ok and fully compliant with WP:EL. Thanks, cheers. --Typewritten (talk) 08:47, 11 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Technological inconsistency[edit]

If the first domestic tape recorders were sold just after WWII then it's just plausible that the 69-year-old Krapp in 1975 could listen to tapes made 30 years earlier, but he couldn't possibly have made tapes when he was in his twenties. In the context of the play this is probably irrelevant, and the tapes are I assume just a metaphor for memory, but it's just one of those little things that nag at the back of my mind.
