These numbers don't add up[edit]

Can someone explain to me why these don't add up? I don't want to change anything that I don't really know about, but I was certainly confused.

64.46% White, 1.93% Black or African American, 0.75% American Indian, 14.88% Asian, 0.27% Pacific Islander, 13.64% from other races, and 4.08% from two or more races. 33.47% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

  • If you ignore the "Hispanic or Latino" number, the others sum to 100.01%, which is quite reasonable. I believe the issue is that the US govenment has Hispanic or Latino listed as an ethnicity, not a race. Because the designation functions independently of race (that is, someone from any race can claim that ethnicity), you can't include it when summing. 24.18.188.79 (talk) 06:28, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Los Angeles County[edit]

Check your Thomas Guide - La Mirada is in Los Angeles County. I am changing all references that mention Orange County Einbierbitte (talk) 23:44, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • To whoever enjoys vandalism and changing the county - county boundaries are established by the State of California and unless you can show me the law that changed La Mirada to Orange County, then kindly GO THE HELL AWAY! Einbierbitte (talk) 00:02, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • It's 100% LA County. I think there may be some valid confusion (as well as vandalism) because apparently the 90638 ZIP code does include some addresses just across the county border in Orange County. The key is that ZIP codes are postal boundaries and may or may not exactly coincide with political boundaries. That correctly addressed mail sent to La Mirada's ZIP code can arrive at an address in Orange County does not mean the actual city of La Mirada exists in both counties. So..yeah, I'll second the anti-vandalism call. 24.18.188.79 (talk) 08:56, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I wholeheartedly agree. I live in La Mirada and I'm 100% sure it's in LA county and it is frustrating when I see it being changed. So thank you! to whoever changes it. 71.103.85.200 (talk) 08:34, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I live in La Mirada and am 110% sure it is Orange County, Half is in los angeles county but OC provides bussingg anything south of rosecrans is in OC! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.165.12.193 (talk) 22:31, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Check the references in the article. They indicate that La Mirada is in Los Angeles County. If you have a citation stating that La Mirada is in Orange County, please provide it. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 22:45, 10 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Regional transit authorities can have service crossing county boundaries. That La Mirada residents are registered to vote through the Los Angeles County registrar-recorder's office (as I was and my parents still are) is much stronger evidence of county membership than bus routes.67.183.19.186 (talk) 09:17, 16 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I grew up in La Mirada and my parents still live there. The city limits of La Mirada are 100% Los Angeles County. As far as I know, there are two superficial things that tie La Mirada to Orange County:

  1. A significant part of the city – including where I grew up – is part of the 714 area code, which is normally associated with Orange County.
  2. A small residential area along the city boundary is considered unincorporated Orange County (not part of the city of Buena Park) but has a La Mirada ZIP Code. Addresses in this area are not numbered according to the city of La Mirada's address scheme (5 digits beginning with a 1). These people pay property taxes to Orange County and do not receive La Mirada city services. This may also be true of the new developments off Beach Boulevard north of Rosecrans; I'm not sure since this area was developed after I moved away.

ZIP codes and area codes can cross city, county, and even state boundaries. So, to think La Mirada is part of Orange County based on these criteria is ludicrous. KuyaBriBriTalk 14:25, 11 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It used to be my job to know every inch of the city boundary, and I will concur with the previous post. There are a few residential streets and a small apartment complex on Ashrove that are in unincorporated Orange County but got to have a La Mirada Zip code because there streets blend into La Mirada neighborhoods and the Coyote Creek seperated them from the rest of the OC. That small neighborhood is OC, if you call 911 youn will get a fire truck from Buena Park and a deputy from Orange County unless it's really bad \then you will get the closest La Mirada deputy as a courtesy. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.58.65.221 (talk) 05:28, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

???[edit]

"Former Mayor Steve Jones is a Biola alum."

Does that really need to be included under the "Politics" section? I think it would be relevant if it were the current mayor, but not now. I'm going to remove it from the article completely for now. If people chime in maybe we can discuss where else to fit it in... Killiondude (talk) 06:47, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think you did the right thing in removing it. That fact should go on an article about Steve Jones or on the Biola article under list of alumni, but not on the article about the city. Thanks, Alanraywiki (talk) 12:25, 16 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Arrest power[edit]

Is it accurate to say that public safety officers have no arrest power? I believe a citizen's arrest is still a legal option, after all. 67.183.19.186 (talk) 09:46, 13 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Joseph Cheong as a Notable Resident[edit]

I added Joseph Cheong as a Notable Resident and someone removed him. Cheong won third place this year in the World Series of Poker, winning over $4 million, in a field of over 7,000 players. The concern may have been that he does not have a wikipedia entry, but I don't think that should block him from being listed as a notable resident. There are currently eight people listed as notable residents of La Mirada, one of whom is notable for being an exotic dancer. Cheong should certainly qualify as a notable resident. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.49.229.181 (talk) 23:36, 12 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
