Lockyadoor[edit]

I wonder that statement "Labrador is often referred to locals as "Lockyadoor" in reference to the high amount of crime within the area." might not be necessary if a reference or crime stats can't verify it to some degree. There's two parts to this issue. Firstly, the nickname Lockyadoor needs sources. Secondly, any claims about a higher crime rate needs sources. For the first issue, a quick google search for "labrador lockyadoor" reveals quite a number of mentions of this nickname and a number of them mention crime as the reason. You can certainly add a couple of these sources to support a statement like "Labrador is sometimes referred to as Lockyadoor because of the perception of higher levels of crime in that area". The key word here is "perception" because we are not saying what the actual crime rate is (or isn't). Moving to the second issue. If we want to say "Labrador is sometimes referred to as Lockyadoor because of the higher levels of crime in that area", then yes we need more sources that confirm that Labrador actually has a higher crime rate than other places (probably other parts of the Gold Coast). So, the decision which way to go with it depends on whether or not you can find some reliable sources about the crime rate. If you can't find them, just go with the "perception" version. Most schools do have a history page on their web site and Labrador is no exception - see here. I agree that nothing there is terribly exciting about it but it serves as a source for a sentence in the history section (or in a separate education section) along the lines of "Labrador State School was opened on 24 January 1921 with an initial enrolment of 26 pupils [assuming I counted correctly]; Miss May Macpherson was the first head teacher." You could also mention that the school moved to a different location in 1952 (which then begs the question of where it was originally) and the student numbers at that time. An encyclopedia article doesn't have to be exciting, just informative on key points. Kerry (talk) 06:21, 21 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the information above. On the Lockyadoor point, I wasn't to comfortable with any references so have edited to 'perception' point. If the person who wrote it /someone else wants to search for crime stats that would be good, but I'll leave it. I'll focus on the school, as i do have reliable info on it, the sleuthing is an interesting part, not always the article parts. I think the general principle is always to make the article better than it is rather than to try to do the impossible and make it perfect. A few photos (even if a bit ordinary) are still better than no photos. I'd go with the ones that have some relationship to the text of the article, so it would seem the estate map (as the article talks of land sales), Labrador House and the school are all suitable photos to use. The milk truck photo doesn't have much link to the text, so I'd be less inclined to use it. If someone else comes up with some better photos later on, then they can replace these ones, but these seem to be the best available so go with them. Kerry (talk) 19:45, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
