Semi-protected edit request on 20 April 2020[edit]

This edit request has been answered. Set the |answered= or |ans= parameter to no to reactivate your request.

In the statistics box on the right hand side of the article, the average depth given for the lake is wrong. Rather than "approx. 300m (980 ft)", it should read "99 m". You could also add a maximum depth of 305 m for this lake. I found these stats here: https://www.lakepedia.com/lake/wanaka.html

However, I have also seen a max depth for this lake given as 311 m, here: https://www.lawa.org.nz/explore-data/otago-region/lakes/lake-wanaka/

Lakepedia appears to be self-published, if there is a better source for the average depth it would be better to use that. The current statistic isn't sourced and so should be removed. – Thjarkur (talk) 12:13, 20 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Parakarehu[edit]

The settlement, described variously as Parakarehu, Para karehu and Para-karehu, was possibly on the same site as present day Wanaka Town (per a previous version of this page), but reading this (admittedly ambiguous) map (from [1]) it appears it may have been to the west of the township, while this LINZ review states it was in the "vicinity of Glendhu Bay" (p. 2), meanwhile this QLDC pdf mentions a Parakarehu kāinga "near present day Penrith" (p. 16). The Taylor source, used to support the claim that the settlement and the town are on the same site, only states curtly that "The pa at Pembroke, Lake Wanaka, was called Para karehu", but the next page goes on to say "Parakarehu is the peninsula at Stevenson's Arm", which is a little surprising.

I don't personally have enough faith in any of these sources to suggest a specific stance for the article, other than to say that the settlement was at the southern end of the lake. maybe the whole para about Wanaka and Parakarehu should be deleted. First paragraph already tells us that Wanaka town is on the lake, and Parekarehu is covered in the history section. What do you think? Somej (talk) 07:33, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Oh yeah, totally. That para is a bit of an awkward one, as you point out. But ideally I'd like to still address Kāti Māmoe and previous kāinga on the lake, because there's clearly more than that one. Even if we just described possible/suspected sites, it would add a lot to the article. But I could only get so far, and it's probably best addressed in the body, as it's a little more complicated than the intro suggests. — HTGS (talk) 11:20, 5 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The Neck, New Zealand redirect[edit]

I'm about to embark on writing The Neck, Stewart Island, an early colonial settlement. However, The Neck, New Zealand redirects here, to Lake Wānaka. No urgency until I've actually finished the article, but I was wondering if there were any tips on how to proceed? Do I add it to the redirect? Change the redirect? Not do anything? The current redirect is the appropriate title for your article to be, Nauseous Man. The redirect has an edit history, though. The way to deal with the situation is a round-robin move.
