Would appreciate an Introduction that summarizes the condition for a non-technical reader.

Suggestions for improving this article[edit]

alternative surgeries like debark when the dog is not a candidate for the more invasive tieback, and different combinations of these two operations
sedatives and cortisones - while not a cure, they can still be of help when waiting to get to a surgery and are often prescribed
vitamins and other supplements used to help the nervous system
as hind-end weakness seems to be so common in LP dogs, it should probably be added to where it talks about neuropathies etc. Not sure if there's any evidence to back this up, though - just the collective experience among caretakers.
post-op care (with tieback, expect at least 24 hours at the hospital plus several weeks of restricted activity and careful feeding)
some surgeons forbid certain types of food and swimming, but many dogs can eat anything after the recovery period and go back to all old activities
quality of life after surgery usually improves greatly
a drawing of the laryngeal area and maybe also a post-op photo of the surgical site

The usual Wikipedia policy seems to be not to link to discussion groups, but the best source for LP information online is the Yahoo group for LP dog owners. It's not only a discussion forum, there are many documents and scientific papers posted in the group's files, and there is a huge database of LP dogs with information about surgical outcomes and other related notions. http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/LP/

Also, if anyone could find another reference to replace the "Laryngeal paralysis in dogs and horses" article, that would be great. A lot of the information in it is outdated, wrong and/or downright dangerous if pet owners make decisions based on it, so it would be best to remove it. Why is the title of this page, which is obviously only geared towards veterinarian sciences, not more specific? I wanted to read about human laryngeal paralysis. I suggest changing the article title to "Laryngeal paralysis in animals."
