I started this as follows:

A lay theologian is a theologian who is not an ordained clergyman.

But the more modern meaning of "lay person" is one who lacks credentials in the field. Could that be what is sometimes (or usually) meant? Michael Hardy (talk) 00:26, 6 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
