Birmingham City[edit]

Note - I am willing to mediate in this discussion in my position as an Admin, and will not express an opinion in the hope that we can come to a compromise. Any edits I make to the article should not be interpreted as me giving 'approval' to any editor's 'version' of the page. GiantSnowman 11:34, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Novak has signed for Birmingham City and there are reliable sources to back this up. I know free agents are not officially released from their old contract until 30 June, but a club may announce a new signing for the 2013/14 season beforehand and I have been updating articles based on this, with references, etc, as have other editors such as Mattythewhite.. see Craig Clay for example, so I believe we don't have to wait until 1 July to update this. • I should note that I'm simply following User:Struway2's position on Birmingham related articles, where we are waiting for 1 July for the full change to be made. I think this issue may need a general RFC for the procedure for all football articles (where the subject in question is either moving clubs, or leaving clubs), otherwise we end up with conflicting edits in this manner. Thanks to GiantSnowman for using their discretion here. Lukeno94 (tell Luke off here) 11:43, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Until July, Mr Novak isn't a Birmingham player, so until July, we shouldn't inaccurately claim that he is. I don't see a problem with sticking to verifiable fact: that he's agreed to join them when his Huddersfield contract expires. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:45, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I don't think we need a full-blown RFC, but it is probably worth discussing at WT:FOOTY so it can be applied to all players. GiantSnowman 11:46, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If there is a reliable source, which there is in this case, then I don't see the problem with updating. JMHamo (talk) 11:49, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The Birmingham City website says that "The 24-year-old, previously at Huddersfield Town, will formally join on July 1 after his current deal with the Terriers expires." Therefore it's inaccurate to state as an encyclopedic fact that Mr Novak is now a Birmingham City player. Mr Novak has agreed to become a Birmingham player; he isn't one yet. It's basic verifiability, as applied to living persons. cheers, Struway2 (talk) 11:54, 23 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • I should note that I had initially followed the (perhaps more conventional) route of updating that JMHamo had in the past; but once I was reverted (somewhere) by Struway2, and they explained why, I realized that it was indeed more correct to refrain from changing the club prior to the date of transfer.
