Communism[edit]

This page is unreliable and the writer talks rubbish. Let me tell you something, my girlfriend is a Polonia Warszawa fan and she knows much more than the idiots who write about this vile club and know absolutely nothing.

If you do some proper research, rather than write aimless junk, you will find that Legia Warszawa are the most hated team in Poland because of their Communist roots. The Polish people suffered a lot during Communism as did many other Eastern European countries like Slovakia, Bulgaria and Czech Republic.

Polonia Warszawa are the oldest football club in Warszawa/Warsaw. They were also the first Polish football club to win the league after World War Two. However, the Communists wanted to destroy the club as Polonia fans were patriotic and Polonia Warszawa had succeeded.

The Communists founded Legia Warszawa and, as well as controlling Legia, they succeeded in relegating Polonia Warszawa to the third division even though Polonia had won the title.

Yes, they may have fought Communism in the Eighties but you fail to mention about their Communist roots. Every club in Poland hates them due to this, especially Polonia as they suffered the most. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.168.190.70 (talk) 00:16, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Larry Bird as a Legia footballer ?[edit]

There is an obvious mistake. Larry Bird (basketball player) is listed as a one of the most famous Legia Warsaw football player. Someone should correct it.

1993 title[edit]

This is a nice story. Legia was going neck and neck (47 points) with ŁKS Łódź, untill the last match day. Legia won away 6-0 at Wisła Kraków, and ŁKS won 7-1 at home against Olimpia Poznań. The Polish FA firstly awarded the title to Legia just to, on the next day award a both sided walkower in these games and in consequence the title went to Lech Poznań. What makes the story nice? The referees in these games. The ref. for Legia's game was Marian Dusza- arrested in 2005 for corruption in Polish football and for ŁKS the current president of the Polish FA Michał Listkiewicz. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.199.198.237 (talk) 23:54, 13 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Racism[edit]

No mention to racism? This is one of the clubs with the worst record in racist violence and abuse by its fans, and no mention to it is being made in the article. Rsazevedo msg 14:47, 11 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I am watching events happening during Legia games and the fact is that racists are some 5-10% of fans. And the club itself has nothing to do with it. Tymek (talk) 14:31, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
But it is certainly worth mentioning. 5-10% of fans is a very high number of people, and episodes regarding racist chants towards black players and objects being thrown onto the pitch have ocurred and the club has been punished by it.
Also, recently BBC made a story on the club, and their reporter (of Indian origin) was prevented from watching a match in the stands because the club officials claimed they could not guarantee his safety; fans threatened to lynch him just because of the colour of his skin. Rsazevedo msg 19:33, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Director of Legia, Krzysztof Miklas, is shocked at lack of competence and bias of the BBC reporter Mihira Bose who made this story. Sadly yet another example of BBC going down and becoming a trumpet of partisan, politically correct journalism. Miklas' utterance is here [1] Translation upon request. Tymek (talk) 22:34, 16 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Images speak for themselves. The fans BBC showed in the stadium certainly did not look peace-loving citizens who would welcome dark-coloured people in their midst. Rsazevedo msg 01:13, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Soccer fans, whether in Poland or in Brazil, are hardly peace-loving citizens during games. As for dark-colored people - well, I have never been to a Legia's game, my hunch is that neither have you, and I cannot state anything about it. If you think it is necessary to include info about racists, just do it. Tymek (talk) 01:39, 17 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On another note, Ransford Osei is not a Legia player, he did not join Legia due to FIFA rules if I am correct, either way he is not part of the team and was not signed on loan or in any other way. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.23.89.80 (talk) 13:11, 22 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Sanctions[edit]

Have the sanctions been lifted? Or how else can Legia be playing FK Moskva now? Alæxis¿question? 17:29, 14 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Legia WarszawaKP Legia WarsawRelisted. Vegaswikian (talk) 00:03, 11 July 2011 (UTC) English name of the city per WP:UE and KP prefix as per Talk:Manchester_United_F.C./Archive_12#Requested_move. Cloudz679 (talk) 21:10, 3 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - Team refers to itself as Legia Warsaw or Legia Warszawa per their own website. There is no naming convention within Ekstraklasa articles on EN:WP, so the cited Manchester United reference is not applicable. Ajh1492 (talk) 17:34, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Just opened their website, "English" title is "Legia Warsaw FC". Don't see how their Polish name is relevant to English Wikipedia. I further suggest following the naming convention which already exists in many European football league, an absence of adherence in the Polish league not being a reason for not having one. Cloudz679 (talk) 19:00, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
it might be worth taking a look here (List of top-division football clubs in UEFA countries), for an idea of how (in)consistent EN:WP club names are across Europe... Ajh1492 (talk) 19:10, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To echo what I wrote at Talk:Polonia Warszawa, it is irrelevant that Warsaw is the English-language name for Warszawa here. What matters is the collocation, namely whether "Legia Warszawa" or "Legia Warsaw" is used in English language. It could be either - I really don't know - but I would expect some idea presented in the initial RM. SeveroTC 09:04, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the comment Severo, the English version of their own website [2] uses Legia Warsaw. How many English users do you think do a search on a Polish word when an English equivalent exists? Cloudz679 (talk) 14:06, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's not about what people search for, it's about what the reliable English-language sources use. I would not be surprised if they used "Legia Warszawa". I would also not be surprised if they used "Legia Warsaw". Either way it requires some evidence of what is used as the common name (as we don't rely upon the official name). SeveroTC 20:31, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
To echo what I wrote at Talk:Polonia Warszawa, Wikipedia:Article Titles settles it with Naturalness – titles are expected to use names and terms that readers are most likely to look for in order to find the article (and to which editors will most naturally link from other articles). Cloudz679 (talk) 21:21, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As I wrote at Talk:Polonia Warszawa, we need to establish the WP:COMMONNAME and as you have brought the RM there's an obligation for you to do it. The common name is the natural name. SeveroTC 13:52, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Fine. Google books in English lists 82 with Legia Warsaw [3] versus 73 with Legia Warszawa [4]. I believe that's enough to get your Support. Thanks. Cloudz679 (talk) 14:37, 7 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I will do a full analysis with searches on the four possible variants (Legia Warszawa, Legia Warsaw, KP Legia Warszawa and KP Legia Warsaw) with searches in Google search, books and news in the next day or so. A result of 82-73 isn't conclusive and the search needs more definition (as per Wikipedia:Search engine test). SeveroTC 13:49, 10 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so the results for Google searches on the four variants of the name are below. I believe that the KP prefix is not necessary - in the link initially given for its inclusion (Talk:Manchester United F.C./Archive 12#Requested move), editors are concerned that a number of clubs within that league require some kind of disambiguation as the name of the club is the same as the name of the city, the F.C./A.F.C. suffix should be used throughout. This argument doesn't apply in the Polish league as the vast majority of clubs have unique names. With this in mind, I believe that we should only apply a prefix or suffix if the burden of WP:COMMONNAME is met and, as such, I conducted the searched with and without it.

Name Google search Unique of 1000(*) Google News Google Books
Legia Warszawa 1.8 million 701 4 77
Legia Warsaw 922k 808 26 97
KP Legia Warszawa 1720 260 0 0
KP Legia Warsaw 25 14 0 0
  • (*) Google only provides 1,000 results - this column provides the actual number of links Google comes up with, the remainder of the 1000 being "similar" links hence this providing a "uniqueness".

The only two viable candidates are Legia Warszawa and Legia Warsaw and I don't feel strongly between the two choices here - the strong news figures possibly gives "Legia Warsaw" the edge. What is clear is that "KP Legia Warsaw" is a construct not used within the English language. SeveroTC 11:02, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose the abbreviation, support renaming to Legia Warsaw. - Darwinek (talk) 11:09, 11 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment. As I was nom, alter proposed target to Legia Warsaw based on the discussion above. Cloudz679 (talk) 23:03, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Is he a notable player ? I doubt it . Let's consider to delete him from the list . The same as Iñaki Descarga or Mamadou Baldé...Osmanek (talk) 06:37, 29 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Legia as a multi-sports club[edit]

I tried to emulate other multi-sports clubs such as CSKA Moscow or S.L. Benfica for example, which would mean that Legia Warsaw will have it's own multi-sport page and the old page to become a football page, to distinguish between Legia's hockey, kickboxing, rugby, speedway and basketball clubs. However it's incomplete and help on expansion etc. would be appreciated! Abcmaxx (talk) 12:46, 29 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
