The obituaries indicate two conflicting locations for birthplace. Guardian says Hannover, Germany; SFgate says Thessaloniki, Greece and includes a date of birth (and is written in 'proper' obit style) so maybe is more reliable? Both authors are reputable critics. No obituary explictly states the date of death.
