Etymology?

Does anyone know where the name 'less' comes from? Is it related to the expression less is more? --213.50.52.226 06:35, 14 September 2006 (UTC)

Memory considerations

In almost 30 years of maintaining less, I've never heard of any organization restricting use of less due to memory concerns. It's certainly possible that it has happened, but I don't think it's at all common. I'd like to see a citation for this. Mnudelman (talk) 20:28, 25 October 2011 (UTC)

License

The infobox currently states that "less" is dual-licensed ("GPL and BSD-like"). But "less"'s GNU Project website states it's licensed under GPL 3 or later. What is correct? --Abdull (talk) 06:58, 25 June 2012 (UTC)

The source code, both on the original page and the copy distributed from the FSF site contains the following comment in the source code

This is correct. The 'Less license' is a 2-Clause BSD license. It is explicitly dual licensed, with a choice of this license, or GPL3. I'm going to add a small note to that effect to clarify, since it is unclear what is meant by simply listing two difference licenses in the sidebar. Its unfortunate that there isn't any mention of this in the FAQ, or a copy of the license in plain text at [1]; but there isn't, so unless anyone objects, I'm going to at links to the license[2] and readme[3], which appears to be an up to date, http accessible cvs checkout of the FreeBSD source, hosted by MIT. allround ability

Obviously most implementations of less are able to check the what file is given and even non-textfiles are processed by invoking suitable programs, e.g. compressed files are decompressed first, PDF-files are converted in plaintext first.
