Proper Reference for Chinese Names[edit]

Mr. Lin's name is given, properly, as "Lin Yutang" according to the Chinese convention of placing the "surname" / "last name" / "family name" first and the "first name" or "given name" second. In English the convention is "first name first, last name last" and the Chinese convention is not well understood. The article then goes on to refer to him as "Lin" without an honorific (e.g., "Mr.") to indicate that this is his last name or family name. This usage will lead the English reader to take "Lin" to be his first name, rather than his last name. It also may considered to be disrespectful. I believe the article should refer to him as "Mr. Lin", not simply "Lin" and that a note of explanation about the ordering or Chinese names would be helpful.

Is there a Wikipedia policy for referencing Chinese names in English? If there is no objection I will update the article to refer to Mr. Lin as "Mr. Lin". — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alan.A.Mick (talkcontribs) 00:58, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, using "Dr. Lin" or "Mr. Lin" is not permitted per MOS:HONORIFIC and MOS:SURNAME. The initial hatnote "This is a Chinese name; the family name is Lin (林)." is enough to establish that Lin is the last name and justify the usage on "Lin" without a honorific in the article. Image orientation[edit]

A careful reading of Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Images suggests to me that the image should be to the left of the main text (as the body is turned to the right). Can somebody who knows about the template being used make the necessary changes? --Paularblaster (talk) 13:56, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, sorry: that's only images not in infoboxes. Don't mind me ... --Paularblaster (talk) 13:59, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Co-authors[edit]

In both sections Works in English by Adet Lin and ... Anor Lin, the first two listings have the form "[year], [title, with ...". It isn't clear to me whether Lin Yutang is also one listed author of these books. Perhaps these listings should spell out the authors, eg "Lin Yutang, Adet Lin, and Anor Lin" or "Adet Lin and Anor Lin". --P64 (talk) 00:49, 16 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
