Although sourced, the claim that this BBC event on 12 October 2012 set a new world record seems to be untrue. In the picture on Ms. Chapman's website (archived here) the certificate reads "the most players to participate in a 5-a-side football match", which they apparently claimed having had 464 people take part. However, the Guinness World Records website lists the record for "most players in a five-a-side soccer exhibition match" as 676, set on 19 May 2012 by Petts Wood Football Club in Kent. As the two events sound entirely similar (24 hours for BBC vs. 25 hours for Petts Wood) and neither the certificate the BBC received nor the Petts Wood record list 'continuous' as a criterion, I suspect that Guinness have been a little flexible with the truth considering the high-profile nature of the BBC's attempt. They may have amended their assessment criteria to include 'continuous' to create a new record for the Radio 5 Live group to 'break', but they clearly didn't break the record they were actually out to set. As the Guinness website makes no mention whatsoever of the BBC attempt, is there any proof elsewhere that they achieved a record, or is this all showbiz smoke and mirrors?
