List criteria[edit]

Hello! I will be requesting assistance from related WIkiprojects to create a list criteria for this article. As it stands the article is currently 285,495 bytes in size. I feel that most of this are entries for non-notable characters that are literally just toys and were seen once in the background or are from a spin-off video game and were a character in the background of one scene. In other words, this article desperately needs to be trimmed down in size. And this isn't the first time there has been discussion about this. I've already removed some characters that are literally only background characters (or are just used for a joke or a cameo of a famous racer in real life or a reference to a famous person). It looks like there may be a significant number of character entries with no sources; given that the article's been previously-tagged for that issue, I think eliminating those would be a good start to narrowing the scope. I'm willing to take a machete to them myself, but I don't want to interfere with your efforts, so I'll hold off unless I hear otherwise. Please @ me if you do want me to work on it. @Doniago: Sounds good. I may add back a few of the things you removed (since I have some prior knowledge since I've watched all 3 films) but other than that it looks good. Update: I've trimmed almost 200,000 Bytes from the article. 200,000 bytes, holy crap. When I initially undertook this project I wasn't expecting so much of the article to just be unsourced, non-notable characters and info. @Kaleeb18: Sure. There may be a few that are notable since they do contribute to the plot of the movie. @Blaze Wolf I'm definitely interested in establishing some sort of criteria for this list, and I have to admire the effort. I agree with most of the removals, though if I was in charge, I would restore all of the members of the Radiator Springs community (Red and Lizzie). I don't really have any rationale for that, just completeness. I would also recommend completely downsizing the Planes sections as much as possible. Once we get a list finalized, I will work on fixing redirects or nominating them for deletion (I had already listed the Elizabeth II one after finding it while researching recent circumstances, God save the Queen). I unfortunately disagree with restoring all of the members of the Radiator Springs community, especially the 2 characters you mentioned as they both don't really play much of a role in the movies. Fair enough. Maybe there's some sort of bullet point compromise, because I would argue that many of these characters could be condensed to important headings (e.g. Radiator Springs, Delinquent Road Hazards, etc.). Since the unit is more notable than the individuals (if Lizzie and Red aren't notable, then I don't see characters like Sarge and Flo as any more notable, other than having bolder personalities). Is there a reason why the more minor characters had to removed entirely as opposed to trimmed down and converted into a bulleted list with anchors? List of SpongeBob SquarePants characters takes this approach, particularly in the Other characters section, and it feels very slim. -BRAINULATOR9 (TALK) 01:48, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all that is true. The key concept is notability, and many of the characters on the Spongebob page are not notable, even if they have been condensed down to bullet point. Most of the character lists on Wikipedia have this problem, even the big ones like Star Wars and Marvel. See Wikipedia:Fancruft. TNstingray (talk) 10:52, 16 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Of course they're not notable; that's why they're on a list as opposed to having their own articles. WP:N explicitly says that it refers to whether a topic should have an article, not the contents thereof.
