List

  • Here's another list we may want to combine our's with: http://www.nndb.com/edu/510/000068306/ Tinlash 18:06, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
  • Hmm... I'm not fond of these new subcategories. Many of the categories are substantially wrong (virtually none of the people listed as "cabinet members" were actually cabinet members), and visually it irritates me. I'm going to perform triage to try to make it more accurate, but other people should weigh in on these changes generally. JTM 02:24, 26 July 2006 (UTC)
  • What do you think about the appearance of the Duke basketball and football coach lists? I think I might have been overzealous with my bolding. JTM 17:55, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
    • I think the bolding should go. It makes the dates more prominent than they should be. Tinlash 19:50, 11 August 2005 (UTC)
    • Removed the bolding to put it in the same form as the presidents. Added links to people to put it in the same form as all the rest of the page. Even if the page doesn't exist, it may in the future. This way, the link doesn't have to be added later. Revert it back if there is a concensus that it shouldn't have been done. Tinlash 17:39, 15 August 2005 (UTC)
      • What do you guys think about putting dates in the following form: "1913 to 1913" to make the formating cleaner?
  • Is Duke University People really the most appropriate title for this? Tfine80 30 June 2005 20:12 (UTC)
    • Guess it's been changed to List of Duke University People just like other universities have it.
    • I agree with Tfine80. Some of the basketball players listed as alumni only spent one year at Duke. Kyle_UNC_Law
    • I adjusted the introduction of the article/list to account for people who attended Duke, but did not graduate. Ttownfeen 00:33, July 18, 2005 (UTC)
  • I actually removed your change, because it turns out that the Duke Alumni Association considers any person who spends two semesters at Duke an alumnus/alumna. They referred to this in an issue of Duke Magazine a couple months back, because some normal alumni had complained that Elton Brand and Luol Deng was referred to as Duke alumni in an NBA ad in a previous issue. As it turns out, that is the proper term for anyone who completed at least a year at Duke. JTM 18:24, 18 July 2005 (UTC)
    • Noted. It's probably best to put that tidbit in the appropriate places. Ttownfeen 00:31, July 19, 2005 (UTC)
    • How about if we put some symbol for those who attended but did not graduate and another symbol for those who received honory degrees? Tinlash
  • "(Insert Name of University) People" is the just the "standard" of what's being used to name alumni and faculty articles. Ttownfeen 20:18, July 9, 2005 (UTC)
    • However, now that I think of it, it should be "List of Duke University People". Also, I'm not sure they list of presidents belong here. Ttownfeen 21:43, July 9, 2005 (UTC)
  • Shouldn't the list of people be alphabetized by last name and not the date of the terminal degree?
    • Personally, I would have alphabetized by last name only, but as this is wikipedia, the standard format just HAS to be weird like that. Ttownfeen 16:13, July 10, 2005 (UTC)
    • I checked the sites for other schools and they were all alphabetized by last name. I went ahead and alphabetized all of them. Tinlash
  • I created a category for Duke alumni called Category:Duke University alumni, in order to prevent Category:Duke University from becoming cluttered. I've added the category to all alumni articles from the top of the page to Anne Tyler, the last in Academia, Research, and Literature, and would appreciate help finishing the rest! JTM 00:14, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
    • Have completed upto and including Carlos Boozer. We should not include Faculty in this list unless they actually attended Duke.Tinlash 04:27, 29 July 2005 (UTC)
    • All right, I've finished them off. Thanks for the help! JTM 23:07, 29 July 2005 (UTC)

Rhodes Scholars

I eliminated the Rhodes Scholars; a number of schools have Rhodes Scholars, and being a Rhodes Scholar is not in and of itself notable enough for an encyclopedia. LaszloWalrus 00:01, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Nobel Laureates

The list of Nobel Laureates is dubious because it seems to include persons with no substantial link to the university. Such padding destroys credibility and looks desperate. For example, Hans Bethe appears to be included in the list just because he once lectured at Duke. Did Bethe ever have a substantive appointment? A legitimate person on such a list should either have an earned Duke degree, or have had a formal appointment as a faculty member or a formal appointment as a researcher. To have credibility, the list should include details of a Laureate's connection to Duke (e.g. Professor of Physics, 1950-59; or Ph.D., physics, 1998; or Director of Laboratory X, 1990-95). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.73.162.217 (talk) 14:20, 9 July 2010 (UTC)

Nobel Laureates Revisited

There are 7 laureates that Duke can indisputably claim an affiliation to: (George Hitchings could also be included under more liberal criteria. He was an adjunct professor)

1). Lefkowitz (Duke professor for over 40 years)
2). Dehmelt (postdoc)
3). Richardson (PhD)
4). Townes (MA)
5). Kobilka (postdoc)
6). Agre (professor)
7). Elion (research professor late in her career)

George Hitchings was an adjunct professor at Duke for a long time. Modrich won the chemistry Nobel Prize in 2015, so Duke can indisputably claim affiliation to 9 Nobel Laureates. In Heels (talk) 08:47, 29 December 2015 (UTC)
