Need to add Root's wicket[edit]

Status[edit]

Total : 626

  • Blue Links : 284 (August 22)

With the creation of an article on Neville Tufnell we now have articles on 300 English Test cricketers. With just 326 to go, that means we are 47.9% complete, jguk 12:45, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Update stats automatically?[edit]

I just updated the stats after the Ashes, but after I'd finished I wondered if someone has a script to do this automatically. Presumably the list was originally generated automatically, so it's possible. Updating them by hand was a bit of a bore, even though only twelve players were used in the series! Stephen Turner 11:58, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, it was generated automatically - but the problem is that I might overwrite a lot of name corrections if I do the automatic thing again. Shouldn't be too hard to figure it out, however. Sam Vimes 12:07, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
That's what I assumed. Is it possible for your program to read this page to get the correct disambiguation links, so that everything can be updated at the press of a button? Stephen Turner 13:30, 20 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Turns out it was a bit too hard for me - however, *Paul* has figured out how to do it. The only problem is that the page will now take on the format of all the other List of international cricketers. I trust this is not a problem? Sam Vimes 09:32, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's actually better to have them all in the same format. However, I hope it won't lose the various bits of rubric, and the two tables at the bottom. Stephen Turner (Talk) 10:00, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've done the main lists, if the other lists are be presented in the same format, probably best done manually. I'll get around to it, but if anyone wants to jump in.... --Paul 16:10, 9 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I've restored the fuller format for sections before the 1990s as none of those statistics will need to be updated. Personally, I like the additional information, jguk 10:03, 10 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Is this updated automatically or not? Viewing the article history suggest not, but the dicussion casts doubt. I'd update it, but I don't know how to find the maidens stats without actually going through each scorecard. HornetMike 14:51, 9 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Try using Cricket Archive instead of cricinfo, it gives the maidens with all the other stats. AMBerry 20:06, 14 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have updated the last caps 643-645 but cricinfo.com stopped responding for me. Tacorrenti 15:47, 24 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed merge[edit]

List of English Test cricketers by cap number also exists. I propose that it is merge with this one (i.e. deleted), as this article has all of the players in chronological order (i.e. by cap number), and explains in the lead here that current players wear their number on their kit. —User:MDCollins (talk) 14:42, 20 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sortable table?[edit]

Interesting page this, but having looked at various other sporting lists (Grand Prix racing, cycling, rugby etc), a common theme is sortable stats. Being able to see at a glance who has the most matches, wickets, runs, etc would be very useful. Also, a key for the column titles would be great (for example I have no idea what BB means). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jcbolton1 (talkcontribs) 22:11, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Smith[edit]

I amended to Mike Smith from Andrew Michael Smith as that was the name he played under rather than his given name.Statto74 (talk) 14:54, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Added a link to Ranjitsinhji[edit]

I read the section on the early days of cricket and the article says "... and Indian Prince Ranjitsinhji". I felt this needed to be investigated because I never knew an Indian Prince ever played cricket for England (technically, well according to everyone but him, he was not a prince).

Unfortunately, there was no link from his name so I copied his name and googled him. Turns out there is a lengthy article about him and it is fascinating; he sounds like a right 'lad'. Satyris410 (talk) 21:42, 12 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your interest in cricket articles. I've reverted your change, because all players are linked in the listings, rather than in the commentaries, and the general rule is to link only once in any article. If you're interested in other Indian notables who played for England, there are articles on Duleepsinhji, Ranji's nephew, and on Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi, both of which are less developed than the Ranji one and could do with some fresh input. Alan Jones[edit]

I've tried to add Alan Jones as cap number 696, though I've mucked up the formatting. Can someone fix? https://www.ecb.co.uk/news/1683188/glamorgan-legend-alan-jones-awarded-england-cap — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.178.222.142 (talk) 12:06, 17 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored this after another editor removed it. Note that the cap numbers will be different to the I as Cricinfo they won't be including Jones in their list because he hasn't played in an actual Test match so won't appear in their auto-generated list. Jones is an exception and the page should reflect the actual cap numbers as per the ECB, but I suspect this will cause issues with editors trying to match the source in future. Put it in a single table[edit]

Literally every other Test side in the world has an equivalent Wikipedia page with all players in a single sortable table. This is much more useful. There's no value at all in breaking it up into chunks like this. I move that we put all players in one table. Ordinary Person (talk) 06:04, 28 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting[edit]

@Faf22xx: Please stop removing the sort tags from players that you update. Need to retain consistency in the tables. Bs1jac (talk) 09:41, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
