Delete this page[edit]

This page is pretty useless. If people want to know about the final matches, they already have the FIFA World Cup to look at and they can also look at the individual World Cups themselves to find more information. This page serves the purpose of showing the history of World Cup finals matches, their results, and the primary characteristics of each match, all in one easy to read list and page. Looking at multiple individual pages to compare games is unwarranted when a page like this can exist at no extra cost to users. Your "reason" for wanting this page deleted essentially boils down to "I think people are too lazy", which is not a reason to delete this page. ThsTorturedSoul (talk) 20:44, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Map of World Cup Winners[edit]

The above statement is actually untrue. French Guiana is not an individual FIFA member. According to FIFA, French Guiana is represented as part of France. As such, French Guiana doesn't individually participate to World Cup qualifiers. Indeed so. There are several "nations" that are affiliated to CONCACAF that aren't part of FIFA: Bonaire, French Guiana, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint Martin and Sint Maarten. That's because all those places are part of either France or the Netherlands. – PeeJay 21:41, 3 December 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Argentina and Germany both listed as runners-up for 2014 World cup[edit]

As the 2014 World Cup finals has not happened yet, I do not think it is correct to list any team as a runner-up for that match (just as no team is said to have won it yet). Results by Nation Is Totally Wrong[edit]

How can Italia be third and Germany 2nd when Italia have won more Cups? We know statistically that the Germans make up the largest block of Wikipedia users but that in itself should not mean they have the right to falsify the information to suit themselves.

The proper order is: 1.Brazil 2.Italy 3.Germany

Can an admin that isn't German correct this bias please.

Netherlands listed as 2014 runners-up[edit]

Map of final venues[edit]

I don't think a map of the final venues is necessary. Their locations in relation to each other are irrelevant and have no bearing on the matches themselves. Furthermore, the venues are mostly in cities that are well known to most readers, which means we don't need to indicate their location. – PeeJay 22:07, 18 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Uruguay in 1924 and 1928[edit]

Should there be some acknowledgement within this article of the fact that FIFA considers the Olympic games in 24 and 28 to be world championships? I don't know whether this should be an asterix or actually acknowledged in the table, but FIFA considers Uruguay to have won four world championships, thus their allowance of Uruguay's four stars on their uniform. An addendum: Perhaps it should be acknowledged in a separate table? I mean, you can't say that Uruguay has strictly speaking won four FIFA world cups (FIFA does say this, after all), but what they have done is win four FIFA world championships, and so I think that needs to be acknowledged in some way. I'm agree with this. FIFA considers 1924 and 1928 Olympics as World Championship. This is very serious. This page must add something about these two final.

Really, where on this list or this article ("Uruguay go in search of their third World Cup") do they count 1924 and 1928 as part of the World Cup? The title is literally "World Cup finals", and not "Olympics, world championships and world cup finals". Basically every single reliable source would say that Uruguay have two World Cup titles. Those world championships don't need explanation at all. This is a list of FIFA World Cup finals. The Olympics is not the FIFA World Cup, even if FIFA have just shrugged and said "yeah, you can consider them world titles if you want". There is a difference between saying "this is a world title" and "this is a World Cup". Regarding my reverted edits[edit]

1) The lead: proposed version, original version

Which version is more to the point, better captures the essence of things, and is more free from details not suitable or necessary for a lead section?

2) The table of results: proposed version, original version, even earlier version

Is it needed to highlight the results based on the manner of winning the match, as if this were a defining characteristic of a match? Also, does it need verbose keys that are already explained in the article and are sometimes wrong (the "a.e.t." is not used only for matches highlighted in pink and does not necessarily mean the match was won after extra time)? --Theurgist (talk) 14:31, 24 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

(again cross-posting) I've restored the lead. The previous versions were a bit messy in style, didn't even properly describe the tiebreaking rules, and contained not-too-relevant details. You can't expect from a list of the finals of a tournament to teach you the basic rules of football (that's what links are for), nor is it crucial for you to know e.g. how many of them took place on Sundays.

I did not for now redo the edits to the lists of results, but would like to do that as well, as discussed. It actually had been me who had scrapped the footnotes and inserted the "a.e.t." (and the penalty shootout scores) into the cells, causing the problems mentioned – but I had to do it. The previous lead wasn't messy at all. It provides useful information for the reader whether they are knowledgeable about the subject or not. The tables are fine as they are. They meet MOS:DTT and WP:ACCESS, there's no need to change them just because WP:IDONTLIKEIT. The tables need to be accessible to everyone, including users with screen readers and disabilities. These articles are featured, and were subject to consensus in that process. There's a reason they look the way they do. Speaking of clarity and accessibility, what's with this sentence in the UEFA Euro article: "The 16 finals to-date have produced seven drawn matches, the eventual winners of which have been determined variously by replay (1968), extra time (1960, 2016), penalty shoot-out (1976, 2020) or golden goal (1996, 2000)"? Not only does it give undue weight to drawn matches, but it also implies randomness, when in fact specific rules applied during each given period.
Also, why is there no mention in the lead of the finalists that never won? This is a list of finals, not a list of winners, after all.

To sum up, these are my points.

The lead
  • It should not omit pertinent details such as the finalists that never won or the rules that applied or would have applied in the past (replay, golden goal).
  • It should not plunge into explanations of things not directly pertaining to the topic, but should link to the articles that explain them. It should not introduce extra time and penalty shoot-outs as something new, as if only World Cup finals use them. For 1950, it should only say that a round-robin was used and the decisive match served as the effective final, with a link to the article.
  • Most of the trivia of the last paragraph is unneeded. A mention of the latest final is possible, but not a must; two separate mentions in the lead are completely unnecessary.
The list of results
  • The colouring of matches won after extra time or penalties is unnecessary. Knockout matches decided this way are neither uncommon nor particularly special. Colour "should never be used as the sole method to convey information", meaning that its presence or absence is treated as indifferent with regard to visually impaired readers – so its removal would not violate MOS:ACCESS, the information already being conveyed by other means.
  • The colouring also makes the legend problematic. The "a.e.t." stands for a result after extra time, not for a win after extra time; it is appended not only to the matches highlighted in pink, which were indeed won this way, but also to those in blue, which were not.

I just made seven corrections and copy edits to the Description & Intro. I’m just a copy editor, but a couple of the problems I found were very strange. except this is the LIST that is supposed to centralize that information, with the helpful feature of being able to sort by this information, thus allowing for determining the set of days on which at least one final has taken place. Opening 20+ articles and sifting through the whole lot of details in them for just the day is quite a lot of effort... Its just a common practice that has been used for like 15 years at every similar "List of finals" sports articles, full date of the match is never listed (UNLESS there would be two finals in the same year), just the year of the edition is listed. Video URLs[edit]

Video URLs are acceptable per WP:Video. The source video is provided by FIFA itself from its official Youtube channel, and they are all short summaries of each final. For example, a video column is included in the List of world records in athletics. Granted, I understand how one article may have certain content may not imply for another to do the same. WP:Video doesn't mention any URLs, this entire page is about uploading videos direclty to Wikipedia. That athletics article is not a FL standard like this one, and obviously the videos should be removed from that page as well, which was already mentioned at Talk:List of world records in athletics#Video. Even if the videos are uploaded by FIFA on official channel and not by some random user, that still doesn't mean that those videos are not copyrighted. Change "Los Angeles" to "Pasadena" and "Paris" to "Saint-Denis"?[edit]

Should we change "Los Angeles" to "Pasadena," and possibly also Paris to Saint-Denis (for 1998 in the graphic under List of FIFA World Cup finals#List of final matches)? I know that some readers won't know Pasadena, but readers also may not be familiar with Lusail, Qatar. The distance from Lusail to Doha's city center is about the same as Pasadena's distance from LA's city center. Solna (instead of Stockholm) presents another difficult choice. The following table correctly lists Pasadena and not Los Angeles. The map shows the location. Should we be consistent and use the actual city names, as we do in the table? Or should we list Doha instead of Lusail to match the convention of listing the nearby, more prominent city? Holy (talk) 18:27, 22 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
