Perfunctory discussion re: ratings[edit]

In these edits [1], [2][3] an IP editor acting in good faith added motion picture ratings for these films. This is inconsistent with MOS:FILM#Ratings. I explained my removal of this content in my edit summary and on the editor's talk page. And on the basis of the guideline I have removed the content again. Yasir72.multan, neither of those release dates are (currently) supported by reliable sources on their own Article pages. If you can find sources that specifically mention the release dates, then they can be added to the page. Primefac (talk) 08:22, 25 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Content out of scope and undue weight[edit]

the content in List_of_Bollywood_films_of_2015#Highest_grossing_films is clearly out of scope. This article is the list of bollywood films of 2015. The List of highest grossing Indian films is <---- -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 06:55, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

plus it is inappropriate copyright violation. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 06:57, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if I see the copyright violation, but I have problems with it for a few reasons: 1) It's unsourced. 2) Even if sourced, Indian cinema gross values should be taken with a grain of salt. 3) It attempts to provide US monetary conversions (which would easily be disputable, with all the fluctuations and such) and which seems out out of place because these are not US films. 4) It seems that top grossers belong in an article specifically about top grossing films in Indian cinema. What is the proposed model for this? It's not List of American films of 2014. I think in a list of films article we should stick to a list, not start wedging more information into it. Maybe a link in the See also section to a suitable article would be fine. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:25, 22 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
There was one link at the top to Koimoi from which every piece of info was copied. Thus making it the copyright violation because it is not merely a collection of facts that everyone would get, it is a collection of Koimoi's particular estimates from their particular art and methodology of determining box office collections. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 13:21, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This edit by Slmnkh is irritating, because clearly other editors have problems with this content and are discussing that. Silent resubmissions with no consensus is disruptive. I have two other problems with the content, one is that the content is ephemeral, so it requires constant updating, which traditionally at these articles results in a lot of shenanigan edits (vandalism). If you're going to add a top ten list, it seems like it you should do that at the end of the year when all the facts are in and you can tie everything up in a little bow. The other problem I have with it, is that it seems to be yet another forum to promote whatever film is doing well in the box office at the moment. Bright blue box so that people know they can still catch the <coiugh cough> "verdict: blockbuster status" film Bajrangi Bhaijaan... Seems sketchy. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 13:50, 23 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
those are also valid reasons for non inclusion. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 12:32, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Tough call on this one. 2015 in Film includes such a table, but it's also using worldwide numbers, not country specific. That page is also significantly different from the various "List of..." articles linked at the bottom. Most of those articles, including the List of American films of 2015 do not have a top grossing list. Given the issues raised, I support not including the list. I think it may be productive to have a discussion at the film project about if the country specific List of... articles should include such a table and also if they should include any other information that's on the top 2015 in Film article that might be relevant to that country (major awards, deaths, etc). Ravensfire (talk) 15:15, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Note - on the copyright violation, if we're just pulling in facts (film name, gross, etc) and including the source, I'm pretty sure that's not a copyright violation. 2015 in Film has such a table, pulling from a specific list from BoxOfficeMojo. I still don't support including the box office list on this article without a larger discussion about these articles and what information should or should not be included here. Ravensfire (talk) 15:22, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If we were pulling simply "facts" they would not be copyrightable. However, there is no official tracking of box office in India, the numbers are purely estimates based on the art and interpretations of each individual publisher, and hence are "creative" and covered by copyright. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 17:22, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ouch. That makes things ... difficult. Somewhat reinforces my view on this. Appreciate the explanation. Ravensfire (talk) 18:46, 24 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Merged Top 10[edit]

As can be seen at the top, merging the Top 10 here was the result of an AfD. Thus it stays here. The numbers for the top-grossing film need to be revised, though. Kraxler (talk) 22:10, 8 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kraxler, well, thankfully, it doesn't have to stay here. Is it my imagination, or was there no indication at this article that a merge proposal was in place? I'm asking because I know that in previous years some editors rejected the inclusion of a top 10 list at these articles for a number of reasons, including that there is no official box office reporting system in Indian film, and every box office tally is an estimate. Of what value is it to dump the table here, and is there any reason why this talk page wasn't notified of the proposal? Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:04, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The AfD ended with consensus to merge it here. Box Office India seems to be a good enough source, it has been unsuccessfully nominated for deletion also, and its merits were debated there. (Its quoted by The India Times and other sources deemed reliable under WP:RS.) We are bound by consensus, and we should respect it. User:TheRedPenOfDoom claims that the Top 10 of the year are "out of scope", but I can't follow that reasoning. This is a list of all films of that year, in chronological order, and a short table showing the top-grossing films is, as aquestion of common sense, of encyclopedic informative value and absolutely within the scope of the article. Target articles are never notified when AfD candidates are proposed to be merged anywhere. If somebody objects to the merger here, I suggest to open a new discussion, and WP:NOTIFY the !voters who opined at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of highest-grossing Bollywood films of 2015 and Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Box Office India (2nd nomination). Kraxler (talk) 18:20, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The subject of this article is List of Bollywood films of 2015 . It is not List of Bollywood films of 2015 with another list of estimated top grossing films and a bunch of other fancruftian sublists -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:23, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It would probably be appropriate to have a text introduction that provides an overview of Bollywood films in 2015 where some limited discussion of box office is mentioned, but I see no encyclopedic value in maintaining cruft sublists. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:26, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
although given that we are not through 2015 yet, such a summary is probably premature until the end of the year reviews are in. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:20, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I suggest you drop the WP:POINTiness. We have Franklin D. Roosevelt which tells us of all the offices he held, although it is not titled FRanklin D. Roosevelt with an overview of all offices he held. Kraxler (talk) 18:32, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
annnnnd? This List of Bollywood films of 2015 tells us the Bollywood films of 2015 just fine without jamming in a sublist. Just like the Franklin D. Roosevelt tells about the offices held without jamming in a sublist of Franklin D. Roosevelt#Offices held by FDR -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:05, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The article is not named Franklin D. Roosevelt with portraits but we have Franklin D. Roosevelt#Portraits. It's a pleasure to argue with you, a pity that I haven't more time for it. Kraxler (talk) 00:16, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And we have special guidance for integrating pictures or galleries into text articles Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Image_galleries which may or may not have been appropriately applied at FDR. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 00:51, 10 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the explanation Kraxler, thank you. I don't particularly have an objection to the inclusion of a top ten list in concept, although the sheer unreliability of box office values in Indian cinema makes it extraordinarily difficult to view any of these lists with anything other than a severe side-eye. However, I know that's not your problem. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 19:36, 9 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Table?[edit]

What happened to the table under, 'Successful Films' section?

Sincerely,

Aceing_Winter_Snows_Harsh_Cold (talk) 04:01, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Did you check the article's edit history? The table was in the article as of a moment ago, but I have removed it again because the entire thing is offensively unencyclopedic. The financial figures already exist in the article prominently displayed at the top. The addition of the ridiculous "verdict" column is completely inappropriate for inclusion. We don't take subjective evaluations, particularly ones that use cute but meaningless subjective labels like "blockbuster", "super hit", "failure", etc. and present that subjective data as incontrovertible fact. When Rotten Tomatoes decides that a film's critical response was poor, Wikipedia doesn't issue the subjective declaration that the film was "rotten". Wikipedia is not a trade rag, it's an encyclopedia, and content should be presented in a neutral tone and should not give one opinion undue weight. There was the added absurdity of having a film labeled "average" in a section marked off for "Successful films". How is an average film considered successful? I'm sure that made sense in the mind of the person who added it, but it makes zero sense in mine. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:41, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Also, I removed the highest grossing table as well. It was unsourced, contained more of the ridiculous verdict column, and the inclusion of such a table was previously opposed for being beyond the scope of this article. See discussion above. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 14:52, 26 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
