Pictures

It would seem best to place pictures of certain players where their most impressive record is. For instance, it would seem a much better fit to put Michael Jordan's picture near his record for scoring average in the Playoffs and discuss this in the caption.

I moved the pic. Quadzilla99 13:04, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
I think the Shaq and D-Wade pics should stay where they are since they are at the free throw line in the pics. WIlt should stay where he is since he dominates the record books; it's only fitting to have him figure prominently in the opening. As a reminder all pics in here would almost certainly have to be entirely free use. Quadzilla99 15:05, 27 April 2007 (UTC)
Sounds fine. Except that we should really look for a pic of Shaq as a Laker since that's where he set all of his records, especially the FT stuff.--TyrusThomas4lyf 04:50, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
Very much needed pics include: Oscar Robertson, Magic Johnson, Hakeem Olajuwon, Jerry West.--TyrusThomas4lyf 04:52, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
One more thing, I agree about Wilt, however I should point out that Jordan has over 50 records. Maybe not quite all of them are official in terms of things recorded in a record book, but at least most are, and he's by far the #2 holder of records, so if you were thinking of featuring the prominent record holders at the top of the page, I guess he would go next to Wilt.--TyrusThomas4lyf 05:00, 28 April 2007 (UTC)
Well, we also need to spread them out though for appearance sake. I like where Jordan is currently right next to his most signifcant records. About the pics they would need to be free use to be used here basically it's confusing but for the most only pics taken by fans can be used here as almost all media pics are copyrighted and we need a substantial reason to use a copyrighted pic. Going for the record

Sorry, don't know for sure, although we could try to find out. My guess is that there are a lot of players who have recorded a FG in more than 89 straight games, but I bet Larry Bird did it.--TyrusThomas4lyf 04:54, 28 April 2007 (UTC)

Proposal

This article is becoming very long, and there is much more content that could be added. I propose creating a second article for Team Records, and rename this article Individual NBA records or something similar. Feel free to comment ZodiiakDial Z 02:26, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

That seems like a very sensible plan to me.--Eva bd 18:26, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
I support the proposed split between team and individual records, and I'd also support a further split into regular season, playoff, and All-Star Game records (the All-Star Game records could remain a combined team and individual set), as there's been confusion regarding the different sections on the part of some editors in the recent past. — Myasuda (talk) 16:19, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
Sounds like a great plan.Chris! ct 17:07, 19 March 2008 (UTC)
I split off the All-Star Game records per above, since that seems to be the area where the most good-faith editing mistakes have been made recently. The new article is National Basketball Association All Star Game Records. I think I'll hold off on the regular season / playoff and individual / team split. If someone else feels there's an immediate need for these splits, they have my support to go ahead and create the articles. — Myasuda (talk) 03:55, 21 March 2008 (UTC)

Best record to not qualify for playoffs

Someone inserted the Warriors 48-34 season into the Best record to not qualify for playoffs section, under the apparent premise that it deserves mention since there are more teams in the playoffs now than in 1971-72. However, the ratio of teams that qualify for the playoffs in those two seasons is not significantly different (47% vs 53%). I've left the entry for now, but since this page is for records only, the Warriors entry needs better justification or it should be removed. Thoughts? — Myasuda (talk) 00:08, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Fouled out vs. disqualifications

I am starting this because an ip kept replacing the word "fouled out" with "disqualifications". Honestly, I never heard of disqualification in the NBA and thus don't know if it is correct at all. I have always hear the use of foul out from ESPN, but not disqualified. So someone who is knowledgeable on this, please elaborate. —Chris! ct 03:19, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Disqualifications (DQs) actually is a standard NBA term. At the same time, judging by the editing pattern, it seems like you may have flushed out another TyrusThomas4lyf (talk · contribs · logs) sock-puppet. It might be worth tracking 75.31.245.128 (talk · contribs · logs) before he causes too much damage. — Myasuda (talk) 03:40, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
Just for reference, see [1] or [2] for some NBA disqualification records. — Myasuda (talk) 03:46, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Redundancies

Maybe I'm missing something but isn't it incredibly redundant to list things like most consecutive seasons as point leader and then most consecutive seasons with the highest points per game? I mean if you are the point leader, then by default you also have the highest number of points per game. I could be wrong, but I am fairly certain that if you're injured while averaging 42 points a game and then you have to sit out the remainder of the season that the 42 points doesn't remain frozen simply because you aren't playing. I guess I am saying that you could simply conflate all the averages with the overall numbers (just put in parenteses how what the overall number averaged out to be per game). The only reason you need to list both most blocks in a season and the highest average of blocks per game in a season is if one is different. This could obviously happen given that there are now more games per season, but as it stands both enteries are the same person and the same seasoon. It's a minor point but I just thought it was odd to have so much needless repetition. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdlund (talkcontribs) 18:58, 2 May 2008 (UTC)

Since players may miss games during the season, leaders in totals are not necessarily leaders in average. While not terribly common, there are still many examples to choose from over the years. Some notable examples include
  • 1967-68: Oscar Robertson led the NBA in both scoring average and assists per game, but Dave Bing led the league in total points and Wilt Chamberlain led the league in total assists.
  • 1976-77: Bill Walton led the league in both rebounds and blocks per game, but Kareem Abdul-Jabbar led the league in total rebounds and total blocks.
  • 1980-81: Magic Johnson led the league in steals per game (he only played in 37 games that season, but made the league minimum qualifications in steals) while Michael Ray Richardson led the league in total steals.
  • 1984-85: Bernard King led the league in scoring average, but Michael Jordan scored the most points.

Something's missing!!

I noticed something GLARINGLY missing from all the individual game records...

Who did the individuals play FOR???

I've gone through trying to add that to the categories as I find time, but it's a pain. Think someone else could help out? Thanks. — Dale Arnett (talk) 17:53, 1 June 2008 (UTC)

Artificial records

I just wanted to elaborate on why I characterized the records Highest percentage of NBA Finals won (min. 8 series) and Highest percentage of NBA Finals MVPs won as artificial. First of all, for those who haven't been keeping score, I should mention that I had a hand in the eventual form of these two entries, and so I didn't feel too out-of-line in removing them. But I'll leave them if the consensus is that they're worthy of retention.

The history of these entries is that user Paulinho28 (whom I believe wanted to honor Michael Jordan with a new entry) entered the record Highest percentage of NBA Finals won (min. 5 series) with Michael Jordan as the only entry. The problem with this (IMO) was that there is that no website, news article, or book that lists this type of record and also it was incomplete. There were plenty of other players to include with a threshold of 5. So, Paulinho28 raised the threshold to 6 and again left MJ as the only entry. At this point, I took over the entry, listed the top members (the three currently listed), and maintained that only the top three be listed since this is a list of records and not runners-up.

In response to this, Paulinho28 decided to create a new entry, Highest percentage of NBA Finals MVPs won in which MJ was guaranteed to be number one. Again, this is not a "record" that one will find in any website (other than this article), news article, or book. It's also close to redundant with "Most NBA Finals Most Valuable Player awards".

Finally, both "records" have debatable interpretations: Paulinho28's definition of percentage is to use only trips to the finals as a denominator rather than seasons played, which would probably be a better and more natural measure . . . that is, if we on wikipedia were allowed to make up new kinds of records.

Question of the day -- do we keep these "records" or remove them?

Myasuda (talk) 03:46, 2 June 2008 (UTC)

There are certainly myriads of other essentially random stat cutoffs that have been posted as "records" and they are not the type of records you will commonly find mentioned. They all fall under the same umbrella. It's in the "other records" section, which seems good enough to warrant it staying. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Squaty squater (talkcontribs) 06:14, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Incorrect Record

Michael Jordan does not hold the record for most consecutive field goals in a game with 13. I don't know exactly who does, but I know the benchmark was set at at least 15 (and possibly higher).

3pt. FGs in a quarter

i read in NBA.com that Michael Redd has the record of the most three-point field goals made in a quarter with 8 122.2.166.207 (talk) 12:59, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

do you have the link? Chensiyuan (talk) 14:02, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
this is the link - i'm the same person that started this section i just forgot to sign in my account. thanks Geminivenom (talk) 13:21, 14 January 2009 (UTC)
It is a true record, but I believe the quarter stats are missing, or at the very least, inconsistent. If we go with the single-quarter records for one, we would need to do it for all (i.e. we have points in a quarter at 33, but are currently missing 3PFG in a quarter, along with others). ShinyHubCaps (talk) 05:51, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Needs More FG/FGA Format

If the data are available, I believe that all of the records indicating the number of FG made (or missed) should always indicate how many were attempted. An example where this is done well is the 3PFG in a single game: Bryant is 12-18, Marshall is 12-19. However, it is missing from 3PFG in a half (among others). I would believe that these instances, especially in tied records, people would like to know FG/FGA. For example, in 3PFG in a half, several individuals have 8. It would look neater, be more informative, and be easier to decipher if we could also include how many each attempted. ShinyHubCaps (talk) 05:57, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

Use of Wiki-links for Team Names

It seems as if only the first occurrence of a team name is the one that gets the wiki-link, but there are many examples where it is highlighted more than once, or it may not be the top one. I will go over it, but I ask that others help out, and if you add a record, check (Ctrl+F) to see if that may be the first occurrence. Otherwise, I would maybe suggest removing all wiki-links from the team names... after all, people can just type in the names. It looks less like a record book with blue text dispersed as frequently as it is for the team names. ShinyHubCaps (talk) 06:23, 22 January 2009 (UTC)

But records change all the time. Chensiyuan (talk) 13:06, 22 January 2009 (UTC)
Then remove all team-name links. I thought it was fine to just do the first, which would make it easier when one changes, but there are links randomly assigned throughout the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by ShinyHubCaps (talkcontribs) 06:17, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
Then why have links. Chensiyuan (talk) 16:30, 24 January 2009 (UTC)
I don't understand. Are you asking why do we have links at all? Obviously to refer the reader to another article. But if you look at it, it is messy with too many links, and it is uneven and redundant with only some instances of team names linked and others not linked. I just thought someone might want to help clean it up. ShinyHubCaps (talk) 17:36, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

I added that the largest comeback was actually the largest 4th quarter comeback cuz otherwise it isn't the bigger whole-game comeback. Am I right? Also, I'm gonna add another record: largest overall comeback, and I'll cite it. Kidlittle (talk) 09:45, 21 May 2009 (UTC)

3pt Career Percentage Record

The record is held by Steve Kerr; the record is 726 made 1,599 attempted for a percentage of .454 according to the reference on the page, NBA.com (reference 7). However, it is erroneously listed as Jason Kappono, who is number two on the all time list. Please make this correction per the reference. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Masilva4242 (talkcontribs) 03:17, 26 August 2009 (UTC)

Most free throws made in a quarter, NBA finals

It says 9 is the record but Paul Pierce got 10 in the 4th quarter of Game 5 of the 2008 Finals. See the play-by-play here and count them up: http://www.nba.com/games/20080615/BOSLAL/playbyplay.html#4. Also, I think the NBA.com encyclopedia (http://www.nba.com/history/records/finals_game_freethrows.html) is where a lot of the records here are taken from, but this is not a good reference despite the fact that the NBA itself runs it. They need to update their site. Besides missing Paul Pierce's record for FTM in a quarter, they also don't have Dwyane Wade's record of 21 FTM in a finals game which was set 5 years ago (http://www.nba.com/games/20060618/DALMIA/boxscore.html). Split off NBA playoff records into a separate article?

Around three and a half years ago, due to article size concerns as well as repeated editing mistakes by editors, I split off the NBA All-Star Game records into a separate article from this one. The current article is still bloated, and there is occasional confusion due to the combination of regular season and playoff records in this article (e.g., see the previous discussion above). I'd like to know if there's any support to splitting off the NBA playoff records into a separate article at this time. — Myasuda (talk) 15:01, 7 August 2011 (UTC)

Given the lack of response to the previous post, let me rephrase it. Are there be any objections to splitting off the NBA playoff records into a separate article? — Myasuda (talk) 13:04, 25 August 2011 (UTC)

24 by Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas Mavericks (vs. Oklahoma City Thunder) on May 17, 2011 Sorry, but that was a playoff game, not a regular season game — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.83.81.248 (talk) 21:53, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Most Free Throws Attempted in a Game (Regular Season)

The record (previously 34 by Wilt Chamberlain) was broken today (1/12/12) by Dwight Howard (Orlando Magic) vs. the Golden State Warriors. He attempted 39 free throws in a single game — Preceding unsigned comment added by Archickc (talkcontribs) 07:56, 13 January 2012 (UTC)

Season average rebounds per game

Something caught my eye as I read through the season record holders for rebounds. When I got to; "Highest rebounds per game average" it is listed as Wilt Chamberlain, with 27.2...reading further Elvin Haynes holds the record for "Highest defensive rebounds per game average" with 13.7....and Moses Malone holds the record for "Highest offensive rebounds per game average" with 7.2......now, simple math will tell you that it is a mathematically impossibility for Wilt Chamberlain NOT to hold (AT LEAST) one of those latter two records. I don't know if they didn't keep track of offensive and defensive when Wilt was playing, but if they did not, then those latter two record need to have foot notes representing that. Chris paul should be added to the list of most seasons leading the league in steals with 3 and soon to be 4. Steve Nash had the highest average in assists with 11.6, unless it was specified for career or for retired players.

Looks like this will likely happen, but let's wait until tomorrow to update the page (under "Most seasons leading league in steals") as the final games of the 2011–12 NBA regular season are tonight. --MuZemike 23:48, 26 April 2012 (UTC)
Made the change for Chris Paul for assists, but I believe that the assists per game statistic is for players who have completed their career or have otherwise retired, which Magic Johnson would rightfully have at this point. --MuZemike 23:14, 27 April 2012 (UTC)

The Sacramento Kings' 35-point comeback against the Chicago Bulls on December 21, 2009, should be the second-greatest comeback in NBA history. The comeback commenced with 8:50 left in the 3rd quarter. Sacramento won the game 102-98. I would like to add this to the biggest comebacks list on the NBA Regular Season Records page.

Korvers 3pt record

Hi guys, maybe you can help me here: the record by Kyle Korver for 'Most consecutive games with a 3-point field goal made' is commonly known, but i just checked out his stats on nba.com and if you go to the game log, it says that he didn't hit a 3pt vs. the Pelicans back at October 13th (0 of 6 3pt). Is this just a mistake by the nba, or is his current record streak fake??? Maybe someone knows... I also thought about watching the game with my League Pass to check if he hit a 3pt shot :D - 2A02:908:E021:C101:B494:8964:3034:BB2A (talk) 14:06, 6 January 2014 (UTC)

The Oklahoma City Thunder vs. the Minnesota Timberwolves on March 23, 2012 (2 OT) (Russell Westbrook 45, Kevin Durant 40)

It has Westbrook linked to the Thunder and Durant linked to the Timberwolves. Kevin Love was the high scorer for the Timberwolves with 51 points that game and Durant had 40 for the Thunder.

Edit Request (Wednesday 10 February)

3 Team Records
 3.2 Season
  Best starts (number of losses)

  • 4: 46–4 by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1966–67 season

The record counts the number of achieved wins when each loss has happened.
The 2015-16 season Golden State Warriors lost their fourth game on Saturday 16 January against the Detroit Pistons, with their record being 37W-4L.
The fact that they have a 10-0 streak since then does not mean they broke the Philadelphia 76ers record.
After all we're talking about "best starts" based on the "number of losses".

In contrary, if the Golden State Warriors win tonigth's game against Phoenix Suns (Wednesday 10 February), that means they can tie or brake Chicago Bulls' record of 48-5, because they will have already 48 wins before their 5th loss.
So at that point, they can be added to the next line as follows:

  • 5: 48–5 by the Chicago Bulls in the 1995–96 season
  • 5: 48-4 by the Golden State Warriors in the 2015–16 season (active - holder until next loss)

And if they win the next game against Portland Trail Blazers also (Friday 19 February), it must be edited as follows:

Cases where postseason record passes the regular season record

This seems to be a common source of confusion. Usually the regular season record is more... but for cases where it is not, there could probably be a some sort of redirect to the postseason record.DavidRF (talk) 01:51, 15 May 2016 (UTC)

The NBA record for most 3-pointers attempted in a game was broken on 1/16/2019 by the Houston Rockets. The Houston Rockets attempted 70 3-pointers on 1/16/2019 in their 145-142 loss to the Brooklyn Nets. This can be verified from any box score, such as from ESPN.com. http://www.espn.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=401071335 208.81.216.8 (talk) 16:49, 17 January 2019 (UTC)

Fewest Two-Pointers by a Team in a Game- It Just Happened on 12/26/2019

The records do not contain categories for the fewest. The New York Knicks just finished a 92-76 win at the Brooklyn Nets. The Brooklyn Nets made only 8 two-pointers, which was the first time a team made 10 or fewer two-pointers since the shot clock started in 1954-1955. My source is the Basketball-Reference Play Index. Most assists in a game without a point, a rebound, a steal, or a block

Hi,

Regarding the "record" for "Most assists in a game without a point, a rebound, a steal, or a block", the date of the match is wrong (in fact only the year). On February 25th, 1990, the Hornets played the Cavaliers and Bogues had 6 points, 11 assists and 1 steal (see boxscore here: https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/199002250CLE.html). The date of the match with 11 assists and no other stats is one year earlier, on the 25th of February 1989, indeed against the Spurs (see boxscore here: https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/198902250CHH.html).

In short: please change "1990" to "1989".

The page is explicitly for records in the regular season. So why is there a note for most points in an overtime period? "Note: the post-season record is 17 by Stephen Curry" No other records have such a note for postseason attached. I believe this line should be removed. 76.66.104.173 (talk) 00:29, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

Notes have been added to those few cases in which the post-season record exceeds the regular season record (e.g. free throws in a game and rebounds in a quarter). This is partly informational, and partly to head off people who mistakenly attempt to replace regular season records with post-season records in this article. The latter has occurred multiple times, but much less frequently after these notes were introduced.—Myasuda (talk) 00:38, 2 May 2020 (UTC)

For team record - fewest points in a game. It should not read pre shot clock. The game took place in 1999 the shot clock was introduced in 1954 2607:FEA8:7CDF:CC63:8CA3:223E:1B33:3948 (talk) 12:46, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

True, it should say post-shot clock instead of pre-shot clock. I'll update the text.—Myasuda (talk) 14:28, 30 May 2020 (UTC)

Teams doubling opponent change

Game in which teams doubled their opponents need to be updated. The grizzles did it to the OKC thunder 152-77 on December 2nd 2021 134.228.156.243 (talk) 03:26, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Not done First, the record is already listed in the article. Second, the final score is 152-79, not 77. Third, it isn't even doubled. 79 doubled is 158 and 152 is just short of that. Engr. Smitty Werben 03:31, 3 December 2021 (UTC)

Fix Table of Contents?

Why are the table of contents arrangement so different between this article and List of WNBA regular season records? Shouldn't table of contents show symmetry to its WNBA counterpart? - BeFriendlyGoodSir (talk) 22:44, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Fastest foul in the NBA history.

I believe Sengun now has the record for it. Check out the Rockets v Clippers match 1/15/2023. He did a foul in jump ball. It was only seconds in the game. 46.196.85.168 (talk) 19:29, 16 January 2023 (UTC)

Unsourced. Also, not all records should be here in this page, as evidenced by the trimmed out current version, compared to the previous years where almost any record people can think of is included here. Engr. Smitty Werben 19:42, 16 January 2023 (UTC)
Fastest foul in NBA history was before tip-off (12:00 minutes remaining in the 1st quarter). It has happened many times (including 4 times in one season). Since the earliest possible time for foul commitment has been achieved on numerous occasions, it is a record to ignore given that it can't be beat and too many have already reached it.BeFriendlyGoodSir (talk) 18:39, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Article was trimmed over the last few years due to issues with verifiability (see WP:V). Referencing is very important to ensure relevant info remains. BeFriendlyGoodSir (talk) 19:13, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

Can we include records for undrafted players

Single-game points for an undrafted player (54) - Fred VanVleet
Points first five career games for an undrafted player (112) - Kendrick Nunn-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:11, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
@TonyTheTiger - Fred's record was added to List of NBA regular season records#Individual game records. And Nunn's record was added to List of NBA regular season records#Rookie and age-related records. - BeFriendlyGoodSir (talk) 17:54, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

breadth

If we are going to have record for first 5 NBA games, we should have record for NBA debut, first 10, 50, 100, all hundreds to 1000.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 18:45, 26 April 2024 (UTC)

We already have records up for NBA debut high in pts, asts, rebs, blks, stls. Good point for 10s, 50s, 100s, 1000s I agree adding but not sure who has those records yet. - BeFriendlyGoodSir (talk) 19:43, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
I think Jeremy Lin has the record for first five games. - BeFriendlyGoodSir (talk) 22:42, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
Jeremy Lin's article says he scored a total of 89, 109, and 136 points in his first three, four, and five career starts (not games), respectively; all three totals are the most by any player since the merger between the American Basketball Association (ABA) and the NBA in 1976–77. It's not an all-time record though, I think? - BeFriendlyGoodSir (talk) 22:46, 26 April 2024 (UTC)
  • I guess we could have records for first start (for full set of stats) and first 5 starts (whatever we can find). (You could note with Lin 3, 4, and 5). Those are important records. They also clarify Linsanity.-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:55, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

POTM and POTW

Do we know the single-season and career records for Player of the month and Player of the Week?-TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 22:23, 28 April 2024 (UTC)
