Statistics[edit]

Hmm, I understand this page as being a "supporting" page for the main Ryder Cup page, where more details on each of the competitions are listed (eg. every year's result). It makes sense additional statistics are also posted here, then. For the record, calculating winning percentage most certainly fits under "routine calculations", which by Wikipedia definition is not original research. -- Lejman (talk) 20:11, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You would be better off having an additional List of Ryder Cup statistics for that, although remember Wikipedia is not a statistics site so we don't need to list every possible stat. This page lists the matches that took place, we don't need the page cluttered with loads of statistics. I really don't think we need wining percentages either, even if they are routine calculations. The most important statistic is how many times the teams won, lost and tied the competition, anything more is trivial in my opinion. NapHit (talk) 21:05, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes I like the idea of a List of Ryder Cup records page. Nigej 21:34, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
That works for me (and I totally agree on the fraction vs "winning percentage" thing btw, heh). The Ryder Cup 2008 page has a LOT of statistics for everything and anything. If we want to source stuff we could probably use that as a basis for it. I'm not suggesting we should add ALL their statistics. -- Lejman (talk) 11:49, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I would be careful using that link as a base because there have been a few matches since then, so it may be out of date. NapHit (talk) 12:52, 5 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't have a strong view either way but I would make one comment: We need to remember that this is a Worldwide English version of Wikipedia. As such I have a strong dislike of the use of the term "Winning percentage" when it is actually a fraction. A winning percentage of .567 makes no sense, use 56.7% if you want a percentage, or call it a fraction. I know it is common usage in American Baseball but it's almost unknown this side of the pond. I suspect it's use is limited to the US and it's sphere of sporting influence. Quite how such a strange term got into common usage is beyond me. Nigej 21:34, 4 October 2012 (UTC)
A couple of further points. Someone added Ryder Cup#Overall by stages (now deleted by Tewapack). To me it didn't add anything. Basically repeated information in the table above it but in a different form. The other point is that, as far as I know, the change from GB in 1971 to GB&I in 1973 was simply a name change. Christy O'Connor Snr played 9 times up to 1971 and he played in 1973 too. As such I'd prefer to see all matches up to 1977 lumped together as GB&I (with a note about the name change perhaps). Quite what the qualification rules were is surprisingly difficult to find out. The original Deed of Trust refers to a "team representing Great Britain" and that they had to be member of the Professional Golfers' Association. The Deed was revised in 1929 to introduce qualification rules but precisely what it said (relating to Ireland) I haven't been able to find out. Nigej 16:04, 5 October 2012 (UTC)
Yes you are correct, I had not noticed that before. It is odd that the official media guide for 2012 (ref 4 on this page) states Irish players were permitted to play for GB for the first time in 1973, when that was not the case. The BBC links go the opposite of this and have GB and I from start. I think adding a note clarifying this would be best. NapHit (talk) 20:50, 6 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
