1938 World Series Radio[edit]

I posted a change but I notice that it is rather odd that the audio file of this broadcast has "WBBM" during station identification breaks but also identifies it as an NBC broadcast. Very confusing. According to a Chicago Tribune article from October 5, 1938, these are the correct network/announcer lineups for the '38 Series:

NBC Red: Tom Manning, Red Barber, George Hicks NBC Blue: John O'Hara, George Higgins, Albert Rosewell CBS: John Harrington, Pat Flanagan, France Laux, Bill Dyer, Mel Allen Mutual: Bob Elson, Stan Lomax, Quin Ryan

If you listen to that audio file from MLB.com, at one point you can definitely hear Flanagan identify himself during the pregame broadcast, and mention that John Harrington (NOT "John Carmichael") would handle the play-by-play for the start of the game. And, yes, WBBM was definitely a CBS - not NBC - affiliate. (Here's a link to the Tribune article; unfortunately, payment is required to view it.) I don't know how the New Yorkers did it, I only know how the Cubs did (and only in regular season, naturally). Actually, when I first started following Cubs-casts in the early 1960s, the TV guys did TV and the radio guys did radio. It was after Brickhouse retired that Caray came along, and he would shuttle between TV and radio, as I think (but am not sure) that he did with the White Sox as well. He probably did for the Cardinals, also, although they had very few telecasts in those days and I didn't get to see any of them in any case. And now that I think of it, I think the Cubs guys did start to switch between TV and radio as early as the 70s, but it was the color guys that switched, oddly enough. Brickhouse was strictly TV and Lloyd was strictly radio. That's a bit off-track, though. It would be interesting to look specifically at the Series coverage and see if there was an interval (probably early in the TV coverage) where some guys were listed for both, and then it became exclusive (as with 1954 for the latter case). Maybe there should be a separate article for List of World Series broadcasts, or maybe this entire article should become List of World Series broadcasts. Game 4 of the 1971 World Series was the first World Series game to be aired in prime time.

Does that have anything to do with the broadcasters, no! But it's relevant. I think any broadcast page would be too short, thats why there's a notes section.

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of List of World Series broadcasters's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Int'l tv Announcers[edit]

Who decided Plesac and Fleming would be international announcers for this year's Series? Useless, one-sided opinions, particularly from Plesac who feels compelled to make an opinion almost after every pitch! Very annoying. Better to watch the game with sound muted!
