No independence was granted / Sheikh of Abu Dhabi[edit]

The British did not 'grant' the Trucial States independence, they announced in 1968 that they would withdraw from the 1892 Treaty in three years time. This led to the established of the UAE by the rulers of the separate emirates. Notwithstanding the name 'Emirates', the Ruler of Abu Dhabi was, and still is, a 'sheikh', not an 'Emir'. --x@x 09:32, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The statement that the United Kingdom granted independence to the UAE is an obvious simplification. However, the term 'to grant independence' is always a simplification. In this particular case, it is technically true that the emirates became independent separately, and only formed a federation the next day, but that one day is hardly worth mentioning in full here.

The ruler of Abu Dhabi is both a sheikh and an emir. However, you're right in saying that he is primarily styled as a sheikh. Bastin 11:25, 31 October 2006 (UTC)
