Addressing issues[edit]

  • The classification into categories was based on the categories found in related journals and books. However, the attribution of categories to all the songs is complicated due to the fact that multiple categories often apply to one song. The attribution was done following these principles:
  • - Whenever a category was assigned to a song in a published journal or book, that category was used .
  • - Whenever multiple categories applied, the most relevant was used.
  • - All efforts have been made to consider other factors such as cultural influences and temporal circumstances.

I have left that issue warning as I consider it relevant. ~~Loguenn~~

  • All songs are now justified by references to formal research papers, related book entries or the original recording of the songs. Songs who do not confirm to these criteria have (and will be) removed until they meet these standards.

I am reaching out regarding the following message I received on the page content:

  • 'This article possibly contains original research. (May 2021)'

I appreciate the feedback, however there would be an issue if the principle is that I should only include songs in a particular category when they are justified by a citation from a journal or publication.

The purpose of this page was to save as many of these calypsos from oblivion as possible, since there is not much existing formal documentation tracking their creation and subject matter. If I would remove the calypso songs that are not formally documented it would perpetrate the issue of that oral art form disappearing.

There are some subjects, such as feminism and war, that are more documented. But many others, especially related to local culture, are not. There simply isn’t any official paper report or journal referring to them.

I am concerned that if we stick to these requirements, we risk ignoring a complete span of oral culture and its significance.

I am aware that we need to work further on adding references in general and I personally do intend to add as many as I can, however I would also ask for help in preserving these songs as they are of cultural significance (even if poorly tracked and archived).

Example: The songs that are generally most cited are all related to American or British culture: See 'American presence in Trinidad' on the page; Or the song 'London is the place for me'.

We do have Youtube videos for the big majority of the songs, as well as the lyrics of many of them, but these cannot be entered in Wikipedia for copyright reasons.

Thank you in advance for any help or advice you can provide on this,

Note: The content of all the calypso added to this list must be validated through: published material, recorded originals or published lyrics.

Would calypsos composed as commercials for businesses e.g SanGrs Emporims by the Keskadee Trio be relevant as a category? I’m sure there are others since the his seems to have been a common practice. I remember seeing an article in which Sparrow said that Jean and Dinah was originally done as an ad for a prominent business but the owner rejected his offer.
