Ethnic vs. race[edit]

Is an ethnic riot (say, Germans on Irish) a race riot? I don't think so. What if a riot is anti-Catholic, but the vast majority of Catholics in an area are only Irish? Is that a race riot, or a religious riot? I would argue it is not racially motivated. Yet, under the subheading for the United States, there are several riots which are ethnic or religious in nature (not racial). I'd like to see some discussion before removing these, though. - Tim1965 (talk) 15:17, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is that in the UK and in a lot of other countries terms 'racial' and 'ethnic' used synonymously. What in the USA are usually called 'races' are actually 'ethnic' categories. A lot of riots listed here are anti-national (anti-Chinese, anti-Indian, anti-Greek riots, Mauritania–Senegal war, race riots in Singapore, anti-Somali riots, etc.), ethnic (Roma riots, anti-Semitic riots, Uyghur incidents, Tibetian unrest, Sino-Malay incidents, riots in the Soviet Union, riots in Spain, etc.), or sectarian riots. (anti-Muslim riots, sectarian violence in Pakistan, Maria Hertogh riots, etc.) Also there is not a clear difference between terms 'racial' and 'ethnic' and the term 'race' can mean many different things depending on culture. Its usage is ambiguous, discouraged and controversial, so I will propose a title change to "List of ethnic riots". Ethnicity can mean national origin, ancestry, culture (including religion), and language so it would be suitable term describing the different elements of the list here. Definition of "riot"[edit]

In the U.K., there is an extremely flexible definition of a riot as involving three or more people. This could lead to excessive listing under the "United Kingdom" section. In the vast majority of the current listed riots, no-one was killed.

I actually added the most recent "riot" to the list, as it seemed no less significant than the Windsor riot or the 2006 one in Dewsbury, but these incidents hardly made the national papers; they were confined to local news. I expect that such things happen in other countries all the time, but would not be classified as a "riot".

I would suggest that there is some sort of definition of a "riot" for this article, as I expect that different countries would give different definitions for the term. Epa101 (talk) 11:16, 20 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Japan missing[edit]

Definition of "race riot" ... or "ethnic riot" ...[edit]

Does it have to be motivated by some kind of specifically 'racial' feeling, or does it just need to involve mostly members of a specific race? Is this really a tenable category? No blacks rioting against whites[edit]

I'm not sure an uprising of forcibly enslaved people against their oppressors is the best example to illustrate your point. Should we also include, e.g., the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising as maybe an anti-German riot?

Stonewall riots, Break Up Page?[edit]

Do the 1969 Stonewall riots belong on this page (List of race riots)? I don't think they can be considered race riots, or "sectarian". Should the name be changed merely to "List of riots"? Or (given the length of the page) the page broken down into multiple pages? I also was wondering just why the Stonewall Riots are listed as a "Race" Riot? The Stonewall riots were about GLBT rights and not about race. The Stonewall riots should be removed from the list.71.185.204.87 (talk) 07:25, 28 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stonewall riots were about ongoing police brutality directed against drag queens and sexual minorities. They're notable, but they're not a race riot. 66.102.83.61 (talk) 04:05, 5 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

UK[edit]

Ok, this is silly. It appears as if a large number of the riots listed for the UK do not really deserve to be described as race riots. I've got rid of 1 (and 2 others that do not appear sufficiently notable). 2011[edit]

Should the Tottenham riots not be on here? No, the London riots in general had a higher correlation with poverty than race. There was no 'racial tension' factor and there were no ethnic groups fighting each other. They were a combination of anti-police and anti-authority rioting that were then piggybacked in a few places by opportunistic looters.

Title alignment, redirection and disambiguation tips[edit]

Wikipedia has good coverage of this area but poor organization and structure. Title Should be List of Race Riots, especially if following the LCCN authority control (listed at the absolute top of the article past the hat notes). LCCN label for the topic is "Race Riots" (not "Ethnic Riots"). Also, they note Race Riots (the preferred label) is a narrower term than "Riots", and "may subdivide geographically" as it is in this list article. More (most?) users search using the more common LCCN term "Race Riot". This can probably be verified by page hit statistics? List of Ethnic Riots could then be a simple redirect to List of Race Riots.

Race Riot should be a helpful disambiguation page which might include the following (a starter list)
