Removed NN entries[edit]

I boldly culled the list of all entries that didn't have a wikilink or didn't lead me to a guitar manufacturer. I know very little of guitars and am sure to have removed legitimate guitar manufacturers. I think they should only be readded though if they have an indication of notability, either through a wikilinked article or a footnote leading to a strong assertion of notability (in which case they can even also have a link to the company website). If there is no inclusion standard though lists like these always deteriorate into a collection of trivial or spammy entries. --AmaltheaTalk 17:12, 29 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

And I have just culled some more. The edit notice is very specific about the inclusion criterion.--ukexpat (talk) 16:41, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of omissions[edit]

There are lots of omitted manufacturers and brand names. E.g. Sigma are a company with a historic link to Martin K'Yari are a low volume manufacturer of beautiful sounding high end guitars

This page could be a use full resource, but needs to be maintained as an index page

I agree with the above. I have a Calatayud y Gisbert which I love. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.132.67.160 (talk) 10:15, 1 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Question: I have an Allegretto brand guitar, made in Korea, model A74 (or A7X- the script is written poorly and by hand), and I see that the brand does not appear in this list. Does anyone know anything about this type of guitar? Should the brand be added to the list? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.181.26.234 (talk) 20:50, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The list of manufacturers in the article all have their own Wikipedia articles (a blue link). Magnolia677 (talk) 23:13, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Why this list fails.[edit]

Properly, for the benefit of informing people who believe Wikipedia to be a reliable source, comment should be made that this is NOT a list of manufacturers, rather a list of Wikipedia articles.

Furthermore, it is not a list of manufacturers at all, but rather a list of brand names. For example, neither Squier nor Washburn actually MAKES guitars (aside from prototyping and very small "custom shop" runs).

(As a stopgap, I have changed the article's intro to reflect the two above-stated points.)

A luthier is an artisan, NOT a "manufacturer." For the most part, small shops have no place on this list, instead maybe at List of luthiers.

At very least, some sort of standard ought be set before inclusion here: how many instruments must be built (annually &/or total) in order to be "a manufacturer"?

Names of defunct manufacturers have been resurrected by unrelated companies, therefore there are modern firms that have never actually created a production instrument, and the shared name is at best misleading. For starters: Harmony, Airline, Washburn, Oscar Schmidt, Silvertone.

Even ignoring all those deep-running flaws, and pretending that the only credible manufacturers (past AND present) have WP articles, the list is neither representative nor comprehensive. There are no criteria for inclusion or exclusion. Compare to:

Being so utterly useless as a reference, my opinion is that such lists as this ought to be immediately deleted and permanently banned from resurrection.

Upon reflection, even if it's allowed to survive, someone ought run through the entries (and new ones as they doubtless will appear) and ensure that the linked articles actually belong here. If it's going to survive, it must be curated. For instance, Maestro guitars begins by saying why it DOES NOT belong here:

Maestro Guitars is … best known for creating custom-made guitars and ukuleles.

In short, a luthiery, maybe a small shop, but NOT a manufacturer. (And in typical WP illogic, linking Maestro Guitars fails, but that's another issue.)
