Status[edit]

The status is a bit vague isn't it... Restored doesn't feel like a very good description of 4248 at Steam, which is essentially in scrapyard condition, but conserved to minimise deterioration. Perhaps we need some definitions...

Operational - is fair enough. Under Overhaul - should be a locomotive that has been returned to running condition in preservation and is actively being repaired to run again. Under Restoration - should be a locomotive that is actively being repaired either from ex Barry or after a similar period of neglect in open storage On Display - Should we have something like this for locomotives that have been restored from scrapyard status, but are not currently operational or under overhaul, but are visible to the public in a museum like situation. Most locos at Didcot railway centre would be in this category. Conserved - appropriate for the likes of 4248, not a complete loco, but not getting rustier. Dismantled - would this be appropriate for some of the project donor locomotives, also the likes of 2873? So Maindy Hall might be dismantled. Or do we need to distinguish between dismantled but theoretically capable of being brought back, like 2873 which is basically just a set of frames and a few other bits, and dismantled and all major parts scrapped and/or reused like Maindy Hall or 3612
