Request to revamp this page[edit]

I'd like to make a request to revamp this page. It seems like there's a problem with the current format and system. For a "low importance" pro-wrestling article, it's getting a surprising amount of edits and revisions. I would propose some changes and guidelines to better manage this article:

1. Rename the article to "List of Major NJPW Events"[edit]

Considering NJPW doesn't do the traditional PPV purchasing system as the west does (at least, not in Japan itself). There are several major events that NJPW holds that would not necessarily qualify as PPV's, but are major enough to warrant being included in a list such as this, and I think it would be more valuable to include those.

2. Sourcing[edit]

This seems to be a major point of contention, as many revisions are cited as being done because of a lack of sources, so here's a list of potential sources. I'm not sure if all of them will qualify under Wikipedia's guidelines, however.

The NJPW website (https://www.njpw.co.jp/) is not as comprehensive as, say, the WWE website is at listing all their previous events. It has the results for events going back to 2007, though only starting with the "New Japan Glory X G.B.H. ~Desperado~" phase of their 35th Anniversary tour.

ProFightDB (http://www.profightdb.com/) is significantly more comprehensive, going back way further than the NJPW website does. It's also linked to on the PWI website as the "IWD Database".

3. What should be included[edit]

Another point for contention is what qualifies for inclusion in this page, especially with my proposal of changing the name to being a list of "Major PPV Events". However, I don't know if there's a definitive source for what NJPW classifies as "major"

Firstly, the one-day big events seem like no-brainers:

Wrestle Kingdom
Sakura Genesis/Invasion Attack
Dominion
King of Pro-Wrestling
Power Struggle

The big tournaments also fit well into this category. It might be best to just include the finals on this page, since that is treated like a big event:

G1 Climax
New Japan Cup
World Tag League
Best of the Super Juniors
Super Junior Tag League

Then there's also a bunch of multi-day events, sometimes across different cities, that I also think should be included:

The New Beginning
Wrestling Dontaku
Destruction

Beyond these, I'm not sure what else *should* be included. For example, just taking what occurred in 2018, there are quite a few events and tours that could be considered major:

Fighting Spirit Unleashed
CEO x NJPW: When Worlds Collide
Kizuna Road
Wrestling Hinokuni
Strong Style Evolved
NJPW Anniversary Show
New Japan Road
New Year Dash

Some of these could qualify as major, but not others, and some are already currently on the page.

There's also the joint shows NJPW holds with Rev Pro, ROH, CMLL, etc.:

Global Wars (with ROH)
Global Wars UK (with Rev Pro)
Strong Style Evolved UK (with Rev Pro)
War of the Worlds (with ROH)
Honor Rising: Japan (with ROH)
Fantastica Mania (with CMLL)
etc.

Again, most of these are already on the page, but not for every year.

This is a section that I cannot give any final say for sure, but I think it makes for a good topic of discussion. If you have any thoughts, feel free to share them.

That's part of why I want to open it up for discussion. I agree, tours generally shouldn't be included. I mainly listed them to help set limits on what should and shouldn't be included. I would disagree on the exclusion of multi-day events. Dontaku, for example, is one of the older events NJPW holds, and only recently became a two-day event. The New Beginning is also an important event for NJPW, seeing as it effectively acts as the starting point for NJPW's year.MarcoTalin12 (talk) 16:16, 16 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. The only obstacle for me right now is how to determine what is "worthy". For example, just this year, NJPW held the "Sengoku Lord in Nagoya" event just this past April. I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't consider it noteworthy or major, but it did feature title defenses for the IWGP US and Intercontinental Championships, which, if we're just going by prestige of titles present, would make it at least as important as Power Struggle. NJPW doesn't seem to differentiate or classify its events very well, so if we don't want to keep revising this page because something isn't major enough, we're gonna need some sort of standard. I would say every NJPW show is noteworthy apart from any 'Road' shows (without major matches) or tournament shows as they'll be covered on the tournament page. Shows that maybe aren't noteworthy enough could at least just be acknowledged on the page. ItChEE40 (talk) 01:32, 4 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of NJPW pay-per-view events → List of Major NJPW Events – NJPW itself doesn't primarily release or publish its events on a traditional PPV format. Historically (before NJPW World was launched), live specials were mainly broadcast on TV through channels like TV Asahi. The events are only broadcast as Pay-Per-View events internationally. Comment I believe before this is moved a clear consensus needs to be researched as to what is considered a major event. Do all of them stream on NJPW world? Major show definition[edit]

I’ll provide a basic definition that we can discuss

A major show is either:

(a) one of the non-road or tournament shows that feature a championship main event

(b) a tournament final

or

I may not be as familiar with NJPW as American promotions but I am not sure this criteria is the definition of one. What is in the main event could really vary depending on storylines, etc. I would say multi-day tournaments in general should not be a major event, by itself. I would say a major event to me is now simply a one day special event at which it airs live either on NJPW World or pay-per-view. I guess I could re-define it. NJPW has usually just aired shows on native TV when not on PPV, and it is no different now with NJPWWorld. A major event should be defined as the focus/climax of a tour, or any special one-off show. Tournaments should only have their final listed, as the whole thing can be summarised in one article. My go to source for how NJPW airs in Japan is a fairly detailed Reddit post on how wrestling distribution works in Japan. It is unfortunately unsourced, so it doesn't work as an official source, but it gives a good idea of the environment there. I'd disagree on excluding multi-day shows. Wrestle Kingdom 14 next year is gonna be two days, and it doesn't get more major than Wrestle Kingdom. AFAIK, NJPW is a live-show oriented promotion, which is why tours are promoted about as much as the single day shows. MarcoTalin12 (talk) 23:23, 24 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(a) is OK, but that excludes a lot of Destruction and New Beginning Shows, as well as a handful of others. With (b), I'd personally go so far as to say include the whole tournament as one event. I'd dispute (c), though. Even with the multi-camera setup, I wouldn't include any single Road To or Tour shows. It'd get messy, and I don't feel like those would fit. Refined NJPW Major Event Criteria[edit]

The basis[edit]

Must be:

A 6-match or higher show;

Live;

And not purely a ‘Road to show’

Either:

(a) the climax of a tour;

Or

(b) a stand-alone major event(s);

The New Beginning in Saporro/Osaka (Yes; 1 for each)

Takashi Iizuka retirement show (50/50; depends if anyone makes it, it would pass, but it doesn’t have to be made)

Inclusion of events pre 2007[edit]

Slightly confused as to why supercards pre 2007 haven't been used up till this point. Granted NJPW have used different methods of streaming and what not but huge events in big stadiums need to be included, even if a handful were taped. They are a lot more massive than tiny events like Tamashii. I've deducted events by whether they were stadium supercards or PPV's that haven't been added yet.
