Major changes[edit]

I will try to chronicle the major changes I have made to the list.

  • Added a column of images
  • Removed death date
  • Expanded prose on deaths
  • Removed alma mater; not sortable was one reason
  • Removed age they walked on surface (the important ones (oldest and youngest) are listed in prose)
  • Moved birth date and EVA date columns to be adjacent, so age can be easily calculated if desired
  • Added a column for what the astronaut did on the Moon
  • Added citations
  • Removed colors in tables; they really did not add much
  • Broke out merged cells, so the table could be sortable

The why on some of it: death date and age are interesting, but there are so many interesting columns we could have. We could have previous space missions, space missions after, university(ies) they attended, hometown. When it comes down to it, the columns I removed can be expressed pretty well in prose. Considering:

  • Column for astronaut's first words on Moon
  • Make table sortable
  • Move footnotes to a footnote section
  • Cropping images so they are the same height or so they are all square

Outside opinions[edit]

@Hawkeye7, Wehwalt, and Balon Greyjoy: I would hate to develop this in a vacuum and have everyone hate it when I moved it to main space. What do you think of the format in general? I want to include a clickable map of their birth locations, and a picture of all of them together once I find it. The table is my biggest concern; do you think the column that describes what they did on the surface is good? I think if I trim back Aldrin's some, it will look better. Then I can get to work writing summaries for all of them. The idea of the column is based on Wehwalt's A-Class and FAC comments of (paraphrased) "But what did this astronaut specifically do on the surface?" I considered having a column of their flights before the lunar mission, their flights after the lunar mission, or a summary of their career; based on the fact the table is a list of people that walked on the Moon, it seemed like described what they did when they walked on the Moon was the most important. What do you think? Like it, hate it? It originally came from List of Apollo Astronauts, and I plan to nix it from there and replace it with a summary when this is released to mainspace. I'm not an expert on lists, but the idea looks good, and I like the idea of individualized activities. Is there any way to get rid of the mission column and sort of include that above each pair of astronauts? Maybe, I will try that or some derivative of it (think it will be tough for it to work well). I have two other ideas to get rid of some things in the table (or supplement); one is a pie chart for their service branches. The other is an idea where I could use a timeline to show their birth date, death date, and mission dates. Thoughts on those? Kees08 (Talk) 02:33, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, probably no for those two things. I think the map is good. I changed the whole table because I think having both the images and prose in the table ruins other aspects of the table. Featured list director/delegates opinions[edit]

@Giants2008, PresN, and The Rambling Man: I am drafting up something I hope to submit as a FLC later. As you can see, I wrote a paragraph on Aldrin's lunar activities, and could write a similar paragraph for the rest of the astronauts. This would give a place for the images to go. I could also nix that entire section and just make a gallery. I suppose I could just nix the images altogether, but they seem useful. Do you have thoughts on this? Summarizing their activities on the Moon would take days, so I was hoping to get an opinion on it prior to potentially wasting a lot of time. (side note, the list came from List_of_Apollo_astronauts#Apollo_astronauts_who_walked_on_the_Moon, but I think it deserves its own article) Kees08 (Talk) 01:28, 26 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lunar EVA duration accuracy[edit]

I hope for it to be temporary, but the column is not as accurate as it could be. I took what sources consider the full EVA time. However, in the example of Apollo 11, Armstrong egressed 20 minutes prior to Aldrin. Aldrin was also the first into the craft, so his total EVA time would be less. I was trying to find sources that detail their individual EVA time, but so far have been unlucky. Feel free to make the column more accurate if you can. Article title[edit]

Is "have" really need in the title? I understand why the first sentence is phrased that way but the title "List of people who walked on the Moon" is just as accurate and more concise.--- Coffeeandcrumbs 01:28, 24 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Sorting by date of death[edit]

Sorting by date of death doesn't work, presumably because that field is empty in certain cases. Nevertheless it ought to work, with the living astronauts sorted to the bottom or top. Does anyone know how to fix this? Ishboyfay (talk) 03:28, 17 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ishboyfay, see if it works for you now. I think the problem was indeed the blanks. The {{Death date and age}} template used in that column emits the age as well as the date, so a "usLongDate" sort was confused by that, along with the blanks, and failing. In the "birth" column the sort seems perfectly happy to have "and age" mixed in with just dates, when there are no blanks.

Anyway, I added "data-sort-value"(s) of YYYY-MM-DD for the "death" field in each row, and changed the column "data-sort-type" to "isoDate", with these edits. There might have been a "simpler" solution but this seemed to work for me. You, or someone, might want to check I didn't screw up any dates transcribing them into the "data-sort-value"(s) - I was careful, but a second pair of eyes never hurts... -- Begoon 03:46, 18 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]
