I think I have collected enough sources (see article) to dispose of the notion that literalism is modern. Its common definition also appears to be the opposite of what our lead says right now: it is creation of music that does not require deep understanding of it to figure out its "meaning" (in the cases such thing even exists, cf. Debussy). Essentially, firing a cannon to represent a battle is literalism (Tchaikovsky, 1812 Overture, surprisingly a good source is elusive, a bad one is [1]).
