Proposed Move

I am proposing moving the article to Los Alamitos Traffic Circle so that the article title matches the name of the traffic circle. -- Hawaiian717 23:01, 3 July 2006 (UTC)

04JUL06 I changed the introduction of the article to include both names for the intersecion: locally and unofficially LOS ALAMITOS TRAFFIC CIRCLE, but officially the LONG BEACH TRAFFIC CIRCLE. I already added a redirect for "LOS ALAMITOS TRAFFIC CIRCLE" and I think it's best to leave it under LONG BEACH TRAFFIC CIRCLE, as that is the official name recognized by the city of Long Beach and the state of California. Oh, ok. I'm withdrawing the move request, I wasn't aware that it was just an unofficial name. The previous version of the intro paragraph, before I changed it, made it sound like Los Alamitos was the official name for it. -- Hawaiian717 16:30, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Actually, judging from the consistent use of the Los Alamitos Traffic Circle on the http://longbeach.gov website, that is probably the official name (the CalTrans website uses both names). On the other hand, a Google search shows that name is very rarely used. The Long Beach Press-Telegram newspaper website NEVER uses that name. The Long Beach locals, as the LBPT website shows, mostly just call it the Traffic Circle, so the current name is the most appropriate. There is one problem I see, however, in that the Traffic Circle is also the unofficial name for the community around the Long Beach Traffic Circle (although mostly by real estate agents).

note: The website for the firm that did the redesign of the traffic circle says that it has the highest traffic volume of any traffic circle in the US. I'd like to find some confirmation of that info before I add it to the article.

note2: both photos look like they are copyright violations and will be deleted sooner or later. There might be some traffic circle photos on Flikr or similar websites that have a GFDL or Creative Commons license that the Wikipedia can use. ^Blank ^Verse 13:47, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Is the caption right?

I used to live right by the circle and drove thru it every day. I moved away a few months ago, but I am 99% certain that the last picture on the page, which claims to be the Los Coyotes entrance, is actually the PCH entrance approaching from the southeast. I think that you are correct. You can see to the left on the other side where PCH starts it's rise into the Signal Hill area. My personal opinion is that the last two photos do not do a very good job of showing the Traffic Circle. What's really needed is a photo from the top of one of the nearby buildings because I don't think you can get a good view from ground level.

01JUL07 - Note on the last picture. Actually it is taken from the parking lot of the Toyota car dealership, located between the PCH (going south) entrance and the Los Coyotes entrance. Note it is directly across from the Super 8 Motel.

Other Traffic Circle in Southern California

The traffic circle (or roundabout, as locals call it) at the Milpas Street offramp from Highway 101 in Santa Barbara is much newer than the Long Beach circle, but is certainly high volume. Any objections to modifying the text here to reflect that? Huntington (talk) 01:52, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Traffic Circle or Roundabout?

Is this truly a roundabout or just a traffic circle that has been reconfigured with roundabout characteristics? Regardless of what the locals call this particle place, I would say it looks like a typical traffic circle and not a roundabout. There is a big distinction. Alot of traffic circles have been reconfigured to be more like roundabouts but traffic circles tend to be much larger and this looks like one of the old style traffic circles and from the year it was built I dont believe any roundabouts existed in the US at the time.Camelbinky (talk) 23:40, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Traffic Accidents in the Circle

Being born and raised in Long Beach, I'd frequently heard horror stories of accidents that occured in the Traffic Circle. I'd like to see some figures if possible that show the accident totals both before and after the redundant traffic signs were posted. It should also be noted that a common erroneous rumor about the Circle is that one of the members of The Beach Boys died there, which is not true. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by GrimGambit (talk • contribs) 17:56, 26 January 2007 (UTC).

In doing some research on the Traffic Circle, I found a CalTrans publication that talked about big drop in accidents after the last reconfiguation. Unfortunately, the numbers were pretty vague. Since I was hoping to find some more concrete data, I didn't add it as a reference. If you'd like to help out and find a good reference, that would be be great. ^Blank ^Verse 13:51, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

This article seems to indicate that is one of the earliest traffic circles in the US. While it is an early example NJ had begun to build circles at least as early as 1925, well before the construction of this particular one.
