Money?

If he had taken so much money, then there'd be something over after his passing? Strange.

More importantly: "For more than 20 years, Pearlman had enticed individuals and banks to invest in Trans Continental Airlines Travel Services Inc. and Trans Continental Airlines Inc., both of which existed only on paper." It says in the text.

Isn't that how drug shipments are financed? This kind of money, maybe from several people, from a ficticious company and either repaid with profit (double) or completely lost when busted. The import/purchase price needs to be paid to the producers before the shipment leaves.
