History

Does anyone know more about the history of loyola that would like to contribute to the article? The history that i have gathered is very incomplete and truncated.--Samwisep86 21:22, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Library Image by User:Matt605

Matt605, the anon user was right in removing the self credit. Although Image:Loyola nola monroe library.JPG is a fine picture, the Wikipedia:Image use policy (User-created images section) states: "All photo credit should be in a summary on the image description page." Hence, the basis for a revert.

You also state that the picture was "intended to appear as credited when uploaded." Unfortunately having released the image into public domain you grant everyone the permission to use your image for whatever purpose they see fit. People don’t even have to appropriatly credit you.

Please read this- License selection to preserve your rights in the future. For example, a CreativeCommons license requires attribution to the author. Best regards, --Riurik 05:04, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

You're right. I do not dispute the legality of any use of images I have released. I never have.Matt605 17:36, 13 August 2006 (UTC)
Ok. Do you want to incorporate your pic back into the article?--Riurik 18:21, 13 August 2006 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Loyolaseal.gif

Image:Loyolaseal.gif is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:43, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

I boldly replaced the Loyola University New Orleans seal with the logo. It is more in line with other University pages and Loyola's own branding policies [1]. See Tulane University, Loyola University Chicago, Harvard University. I cited the image according to all necessary fair use rules. Eclectek C T 00:21, 13 April 2008 (UTC)

I'm not exactly sure why it is necessary to remove the seal from the infobox - university guidelines are the not the same as wikipedia guidelines. Furthermore, there are no restrictions on the use of a seal under the link you provided, it simply says that the seal should be used in more formal contexts than the logo. Is wikipedia not formal enough for the normal seal, which predates the logo, to be used? Almost all university pages have this format, hence, the order of the infobox that can see here. I think that the proper reference point should be articles that are already good articles or featured articles and not just any B class article. For example, a good article to consider would be Cornell University as it is already a wp:featured article. The CU article employs the same concept as the infobox template implies: seal then logo.
Also, just a minor correction, the USNews ranked Loyola 6th as a regional university not simply its masters program (in other words it is a regional masters level university).
Please do not misunderstand me, I am not trying to start any type of editing conflict, I believe that I am on the same page as you, and I would love to help this article be nominated for good article status, the very same way I have significantly contributed to other higher education articles that are now good articles. I look forward to improving this article with you, a fellow established user. aNubiSIII (T / C) 22:06, 20 July 2008 (UTC)
I honestly do not care strongly enough about this to revert this edit or oppose what you've presented. As a student at Loyola University New Orleans, I can tell you which graphic is more commonly used (and more commonly recognized by the public). That'd be the logo, not the seal. But really, not a big deal. At least re-upload the seal as a raster vector image so it doesn't have a white background. Eclectek C T 02:34, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
I have to agree with Anumbis, Eclectek. Many of the university articles on WP I have seen the University being used. The Loyola seal is often used on campus (there are two physical depictions of the seal on campus), and it used as the watermark on all official Loyola stationary. IMO, the seal is more distinctive than the logo. Samwisep86 (talk) 00:44, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Again, no big deal. Seal is fine with me. Eclectek C T 01:38, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Remove copyright violation / Goals of Loyola section

I deleted the addition of "Goals of Loyola" [2] in accordance with WP:COPYVIO. They were copy and pasted directly from Loyola's website without permission. See [3].

Masters v Undergrad according to US News and W.Report

Please see the following link directly from US News and World Report regarding the ranking of Loyola University New Orleans [4]. It states that Loyola ranks "Universities–Master's (South), 6" meaning Loyola's masters program ranks 6th among southern universities. This is not ambiguous. Do not revert without citing your source. Eclectek C T 02:58, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

On reading this many times in a row, I'm not as certain as I was before about this applying to Loyola's masters programs. I'd like to see documentation explaining exactly what that rating means. Eclectek C T 04:14, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
From the US News and World report site on methodology of college rankings: "The national universities offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and Ph.D. programs, and emphasize faculty research. The liberal arts colleges focus almost exclusively on undergraduate education. They award at least 50 percent of their degrees in the arts and sciences. The universities-master's offer a broad scope of undergraduate degrees and some master's degree programs but few, if any, doctoral programs. The baccalaureate colleges focus on undergraduate education but grant fewer than 50 percent of their degrees in liberal arts disciplines. The baccalaureate colleges include institutions where at least 10 percent of the undergraduate degrees awarded are bachelor's degrees. The universities-master's and baccalaureate colleges categories are further subdivided by geography—North, South, Midwest, and West."[5]
Based upon this information, I am reverting my changes in just a second. Eclectek C T 04:18, 21 July 2008 (UTC)
Clarified and added sources explaining what "Universities-Master's (South)" means. Issue should be resolved now. Eclectek C T 04:28, 21 July 2008 (UTC)

Pictures

I think some illustrative pictures would improve both this article and the College of Law article. Can anyone provide some good, self taken pictures of Loyola's campuses (buildings, etc.) for the articles? Samwisep86 (talk) 04:23, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Article Review

As per request to review the article before it hits GA nomination, here's my two cents:

  • First off, information in the University section really should be in the infobox or in other sections of the article. Please read the Article Guidelines from WikiProject Universities.
  • The Academics section has a lot of external links. It is best to keep the reader inside Wikipedia as much as possible. You may substitute the stack of external links with a university website link at the end of the article which explains all of the centers and institutes.
  • Campus: "(named after the Salvadoran martyrs of 1989[3])" - was that supposed to be a reference tag?
  • Student Life: List of Fraternities and Sororities would look better if split into two columns
  • Notable Alumni section is not organized in any form. It should either be organized by last name, class year, or be put in a dynamic list {{Alum}}.
  • Notable Alumni and Prominent Professors sections should be merged into "Notable Loyola University New Orleans people" and then split into subsections.
  • Note on references: you will need much, much more than 17 references for a GA article. I would suggest that a thorough search on findarticle.com or google search of facts and references pertaining to the university.
  • External links section needs work. You really should need one main university link, one athletics link, and maybe a couple other significant external links. "Giving to LUNO" should not be an external link and is almost borderline spam.

This should give you quite a bit to work on, let me know if you want a second look. - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 06:13, 23 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the comments. There is a bit to work on, but it'll be worth it in the end.Samwisep86 (talk) 06:41, 23 July 2008 (UTC)
Regarding your third point, Jameson, the Salvadoran martyrs was not meant to be a reference, but since there is no article currently chronicling the event on WP , I thought that would be good there until an article is created. Samwisep86 (talk) 01:40, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
I know there's a Maroon article to cite about the Peace Quad being named after the martyrs. I've seen it in a scrapbook. I'll look for it this weekend. Maybe in the mean time it would be useful to link to the three martyrs who have wiki articles...Ignacio Ellacuría, Ignacio Martín-Baró, and Segundo Montes. Eclectek C T 01:47, 24 July 2008 (UTC)
Yes, I've seen a flyer that was for the dedication of the Peace Quad also, but that not a verifiable source. Unfortunately most of the achives of the Maroon are not online, which is a shame. If you can get that article, Eclectek, that would be great. Samwisep86 (talk) 01:52, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

It looks like it's coming together. Right now it looks like the list of university presidents looks slightly out of place. I was just helping out another university article and they use a simple list split into two columns to convey similar information. Perhaps you may look into it. I've also split the reference list into two columns for space saving. - Jameson L. Tai talkcontribs 02:37, 24 July 2008 (UTC)

Rivalry?

Does it really make sense to talk about a rivalry between a Division I, mid-major conference team like Tulane and an NAIA team like Loyola? Does Loyola ever win? john k (talk) 17:04, 29 November 2008 (UTC) Do you have to win to have it be a rivalry? The basketball is the best attended Loyola sporting event. And, while it's certainly playful (since Loyola students frequently use aspects of the Tulane campus), it's still a rivalry. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.229.48.90 (talk) 04:04, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Deletion of category

Since the rest of us were unaware that the category "Educational Institutions named for St. Ignatius Loyola" was up for deletion, and the pointers to the CFD discussion don't seem to go anywhere, maybe someone could summarize why the category was deleted? Thanks. Student7 (talk) 01:27, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

RACISM

I wish someone would update this to include the racial history of New Orleans and Loyola. I went to school there, and I found out that the school would not accept African Americans until the 1970's Dkceaser (talk) 10:50, 6 January 2010 (UTC)

I'm not sure of the specifics, but this wikipedia article on Norman Francis reads: "Francis earned a B.S. degree from Xavier University of Louisiana in 1952. He then became the first African-American to enroll at Loyola University New Orleans and then Loyola University Law School, where he received his J.D. in 1955." I guess if you can find some reliable source affirming your assertions, though, add it. Ikilled007 (talk) 12:03, 6 January 2010 (UTC)
I can confirm that Norman Francis was the first African American to enroll at Loyola in the early Fifties, however only at the law school. The first undergraduate African-American student was admitted in the 1970s. The period is covered in Black, White, and Catholic: New Orleans Interracialism, 1947-1956, however I do not have the book handy to cite it directly. --Samwisep86 (talk) 06:22, 7 January 2010 (UTC)
After going a Google search I found that most of the book can be found online at Google Books: http://books.google.com/books?id=rcO5WhAJsFgC&dq=black+white+and+catholic&source=gbs_navlinks_s . --Samwisep86 (talk) 06:32, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Secret Society

1540, Loyola's "secret society," does not need to be mentioned. It was recently created by the university, has very few members and doesn't do anything noteworthy. It also uses weasel-words in its article--an article that was clearly written by a member of 1540. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iain Weigert (talkcontribs) 05:30, 8 May 2010 (UTC)
