Who Was Really the Lyricist?[edit]

Odd. Where credit for the lyricist of this tune is given on recordings (frequently it is not) I have usually seen it as George David Weiss (Weiss's Wikipedia page credits him). A Wikipedia example is Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday at Newport. Who is or was B.Y. Forster? Were there different sets of lyrics? After six months, I found confirmation for Weiss as the lyricist on the Songwriters Hall of Fame Web site --Alan W (talk) 23:26, 13 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From Standards web site:

The lyrics are frequently credited to B. Y. Forster, and in his autobiography Shearing explains the mystery. It was against the rules at the time for an ASCAP writer to write with a BMI composer, so Weiss had to assume an alias. Ever the punster, Shearing says, “I guess you could say that it [‘Lullaby of Birdland’] was a half ASCAP tune.” -- Nonenmac (talk) 13:48, 7 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
