Discussion[edit]

It's difficult to enter the forein music.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.139.40.93 (talkcontribs)

Can you provide solid facts and examples, please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.36.147.114 (talkcontribs)

Hi there,
In my opinion, if she copies other stars of the world, that isnt an issue here.
What counts is, is the info right on this page.

My Tam is indeed the most famous Vietnamese singer in the last 6 years in Vietnam, and the most well payed too.
Everybody knows her here, and in all the Vietnamese communities in the USA and all over the world as well.
Type her name in English "Ca si My Tam" (ca si means singer) or in Vietnamese writing "Ca sĩ Mỹ Tâm" in Google and you get 100.000 sites.
As I can see, all the info is correct.

Page move to "My Tam"[edit]

This article was at "Mỹ Tâm" for a long time until I moved it just recently. I was attempting to anglicize the spelling, but screwed it up. She is "My Tam" to VOV News, to the Vietnam News Agency, to Thanh Nien, and to ABC News. Her Vietnamese album labels say "Mỹ Tâm". Hopefully, somebody can fix this. Kauffner (talk) 10:18, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I moved it back. It's not clear what you were trying to accomplish, or what went wrong, but the old title seemed fine, per this bio and this item. Dicklyon (talk) 22:43, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The first link is to a mirror of this article, and the second link (to esnips) appears to be some sort of user-generated copy vio compilation. It begins, "My Tam - Princess VPOP - DIVA Vietnam. You know what about her?", which suggests that it is not copy edited. It includes cut and pasted material from three English-language sources, all three of which give her name as "My Tam" without a diacritic. Her own site does not give a diacritic in the English-language version of her name: "Welcome to My Tam's Official website". The same site calls her "Mỹ Tâm" in Vietnamese, so the Webmaster obviously could put the Vietnamese diacritics in if he so desired. Oh, and I found the original ABC News item about her here. (Not much to look at considering the excitement it generated in the Vietnamese press.) Kauffner (talk) 23:52, 17 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pointing out the errors in my links. I suggest an RM if you think the version without diacriticals would be more appropriate here. I still don't understand quite what you did or what help you were asking for after your first move; I hope moving it back was helpful. Dicklyon (talk) 06:56, 19 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress[edit]

Legacy or just praise?[edit]

I removed this section from the article, as I wasn't sure if this was relevant. Usually the article should talk about who were My Tam's inspirations and not the other way around. If there are particular examples of singers that model her singing style, that can be added to the Artistry/Musical style. Please create a Legacy section if appropriate. AngusWOOF (talk) 23:13, 16 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • On one of her trips to Vietnam, Park Jung Ah, a member of the Korean girlgroup Jewelry, expressed that she liked My Tam the most among all Vietnamese singers because she has a very impressive style.[1]
  • Singer Hiền Thục believed My Tam deserved the first rank thanks to her powerful and emotional voice.[2]
  • Singer Thy Dung admitted she modeled herself on My Tam.[3]
  • Male singer Đăng Khôi said My Tam is the artist he most admires.
  • In 2008, according to Vietnamnet, Vietnamese showbiz recognized My Tam as ranking first.
  • In 2008, Diva Hồng Nhung remarked that she liked listening to My Tam's songs and that My Tam proved her own class with her two recent albumns[4]
  • Vietnam Idol 2008 runner-up Thanh Duy said he was a fan of My Tam when she came to give professional advice to the contestants.
  • Male singer Ngô Thiên said in an interview that he idolized My Tam for her talent and strong determination and that he would shout in excitement if he met My Tam in real life.[5]
  • Singer Uyên Trang admired Mỹ Tâm's lifestyle, professionalism, and talent, and hoped she would be as successful as My Tam.[6]
  • Diva Trần Thu Hà praised My Tam for her professional and successful live concert tour "Sóng đa tần" ("Multi-frequency Sound Waves")[7]
  • Singer Hồ Ngọc Hà said in 2009 that My Tam deserves all her successes and public recognition for her hard work, outstanding musical abilities and nonstop originality.[8]
  • Singer Lệ Quyên appreciated that no other artist possesses such a substantial repertoire as that of My Tam. In her opinion, My Tam always strives for the best and explores different genres to scale the heights.[9]
  • In the review by ABC News (America) in August 2010, My Tam ranked 6th out of 12 "ABC's Global Pop Sensations You've Never Heard Of".[10][11] Done
  • Also in 2010, in the "Finger Print" talkshow Diva Mỹ Linh believed My Tam to be the diva of the new generation.[12]
  • Male singer Wanbi Tuấn Anh said he likes listening to My Tam's songs and he is also a fan of her.[13]
  • When interviewed by the Vietnam Post in 2011, singer Vy Oanh said she admired My Tam for having graduated as a top student from Ho Chi Minh Conservatory of Music while being such a famous singer. She also liked My Tam's hospitality and kindness.[14] Done
I think the ABC News mention should be put back in. It was a big deal in Vietnam. Every Vietnamese paper ran a story about it. Kauffner (talk) 14:56, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I'll add the ABC News mention to the 2010 section; it's also in the awards, and also the top student comment. AngusWOOF (talk) 15:19, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

early awards 1997-1998[edit]

I removed these from the awards list as they were before she started her official singing career, and appear to be local awards. AngusWOOF (talk) 01:57, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • First prize as a solo performer in the "Spring of 1997" in Đà Nẵng City
  • Gold Medal for Best Vocal in 1997
  • First prize in the "Singing Contest of District Tan Binh", HCMC in 1998
  • First prize in the "Singing Contest of District 6", HCMC in 1998
  • First prize in the "Muc Tim Newspaper's Best Vocal" in 1998

Please add sources[edit]

Most of this article needs source verification. The critics statements, assumed quotations from Tam, the release dates, comments and charts that confirm popularity. All of it needs to be sourced! AngusWOOF (talk) 02:57, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

There is an English-language profile of the subject here, one in Vietnamese here. Kauffner (talk) 10:19, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

need help with Vietnamese titles[edit]

Is there a standard way to list titles of songs and albums for this project? I've been assuming

  • songs: "Vietnamese title" (English title)
  • albums: English title

AngusWOOF (talk) 03:00, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We're going with this convention:
  • songs: "Vietnamese Title" (English Title)
  • albums: Vietnamese Title (English Title)

Diacritics okay to include. Capitalization per standard Vietnamese and English album/song titles. Exceptions are for English or non-Vietnamese titled songs and albums (e.g. Yesterday & Now), which get the direct title. AngusWOOF (talk) 16:21, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone confirm release date for Fly?[edit]

Was Fly released in 2005 or 2007? How many versions were there? AngusWOOF (talk) 03:04, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It was released in 2006, according to Zing. The way it is now, it looks like the album is named Fly – Vút Bay. Shouldn't it be "Vút Bay (Fly)"? Kauffner (talk) 08:55, 21 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

discography on mtv exit - reliable source or shadowed source.[edit]

I found this article on MTV EXIT: http://mtvexit.org/vietnam/en/artists/m/ It lists some of her release dates, although I am not sure how reliable the source is. Did it copy an older copy of Wikipedia or vice versa? I know MTV Artists.com copies the data from Wikipedia.

My TamMỹ Tâm – not sure why this singer is out of line with all other Vietnam BLPs. Full spelling per Olsen Popular Music of Vietnam 2008 "Mỹ Tâm is Vietnam's most famous pop singer in the first decade of the twenty-first century (Figure 3.8).", etc. In ictu oculi (talk) 12:01, 8 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support. Standard practice (after thousands of RMs at this point) is to use diacritics when they can be reliably sourced as pertaining. Moves like this can simply be done manually, or speedily via WP:RM/TR. They are no longer controversial (for years now) except under unusual circumstances (e.g. a bio subject pointedly abandoned their former diacritic).  — SMcCandlish ¢ ≽ʌⱷ҅ʌ≼  12:26, 10 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose. The Merriam-Webster dictionaries set the standard for U.S. spelling, while Oxford Dictionaries does the same for British spelling. Of course, My Tam’s name isn’t given in any dictionary. But the pattern is clear: Diacritics are given for names from many languages, but not in the case of Vietnamese. Every major publisher follows one of these two standards. Check Britannica, Columbia, or even VietnamNet Bridge, the country’s top English language news site. What’s wrong with Vietnamese diacritics? ‘’National Geographic Style Manual” explains it this way: “Although Vietnamese is written in the Latin alphabet, the number of accent marks can be distracting and may therefore be omitted.” SillyBear (talk) 10:18, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Per standard practice. Check out Category:Vietnamese female singers, no reason she should be the exception as she's not based in a western country. Timmyshin (talk) 22:33, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment is there a strong branding of her name without the diacritics? AngusWOOF (barksniff) 22:36, 20 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

She used to have a site called "Welcome to MY TAM's House | the My Tam official website" with her name given in English without diacritics. I don't see anything up currently that would tell you what her preference might be. SillyBear (talk) 01:44, 24 September 2017 (UTC) [reply]
