US firms[edit]

I removed the reference to Sullivan & Cromwell as being a peer of the magic circle firms. Although S&C has been in London longer than any of the other US firms, their London office is still pretty modest (I have never seen it ranked in the top 10 for anything in the UK). If any single US firm deserved to be singled out it would likely be either (a) White & Case (by some distance the largest US firm in London after Baker & McKenzie) for shaking up the recruitment market so heavily in the late 1990s by offering significantly higher salaries than the magic circle and poaching away many of the best people, or (b) Mayer Brown Rowe & Maw, who are the only US firm recognised as being in the second-tier Silver Circle in the UK. --Legis (talk - contributions) 13:23, 10 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Citation needed tag[edit]

This page seems to me to be a bad example of the "citation needed" nazis who patrol Wikipedia. "Magic circle" is an informal term that is widely used within the profession and the media in the United Kingdom, although it won't appear in any dictionary. A simple Google search will verify its meaning and its frequency of use. There have to be limits to which factual statement require citations and references. I just get sick of:

"London is the capital city of the United Kingdom.{{citation-needed}} Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state{{citation-needed}} and Tony Blair is the prime minister{{citation-needed}}, although he is widely expected to step down during the middle of 2007.{{weasel}}"

A little perspective please. --Legis (talk - contributions) 10:38, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Linklaters & Clifford Chance layoffs[edit]

Would it be appropriate to mention the recent layoffs at Linklaters and the upcoming layoffs at Clifford Chance? http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601102&sid=aqB9j6fCefJg&refer=uk —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.0.192.78 (talk) 22:03, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
