Can someone please explain the partys (and the recent incident) more in detail. As what does the party stand for, what are they opposed of, history etc.. For a bystander it almost look like red vs black ants. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Klopto (talkcontribs) 04:19, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

First off, like Stephen Colbert, I'm blind to caste because I don't speak any of the local languages, but the English press seems to regard MNS as a vehicle for Raj, using anti-Hindi sentiment in a cynical fashion to gain power.

But there is a large Marathi speaking population in the state that feels somewhat disenfranchised in their own country by a Hindi speaking majority in India overall, that practices forms of Hindu that are foreign to the Marathi. I suppose it would be as if Texas was dismissed as just another midwest state or something.

Should we keep a list of every twitch the MNS makes?

Hcobb (talk) 18:23, 9 September 2008 (UTC) i think the way u guys work for the maharashtrians is very cool, but at the same time i thought we should keep averyone with us,that means there are some people who appreciate ur work but they are not satisfied the way you did it.coz with this eliment u can win d hearts of maharashtrian people but at d same time we loose our respect infront of the different language speakers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Rohit$12 (talkcontribs) 06:59, 16 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm no expert on either Raj or MNS, but he is basically trying to keep the regional identity of Maharashtra alive. In all other states, regional languages are predominantly spoken. In urban Maharashtra and Mumbai (financial capital + bollywood) in particular, other languages eclipse Marathi, and large migrant populations settle in slums in public spaces creating issues with jobs, corruption (vote bank politics in particular), etc. Possibly similar to Indians in Britain? He is also fighting corruption in government job allocations where Maharashtrians are inadequately represented. Essentially, he stands for the Marathi man, regional dignity and enduring culture and efficiency in governance.

He opposes corruption in politics, public job allocations inequality, Pakistani artists finding a platform in Maharashtra (India ideally) for as long as diplomatic ties with Pakistan are off, and the marginalization of Maharashtrian people and language within the Maharashtra state. This is why he has extensive approval and support of lower and middle class Maharashtrians, including Muslims (parent organization - Shiv Sena is hardcore Hindutva oriented). The upper classes and outsiders are generally revolted by the methods he uses - protests, physical disruption of things he is opposing (railway entrance exams with migrant job applicants who often arrived specifically for exams in Maharashtra that weren't announced in the Marathi papers, but announced half way across the country in Bihar), etc. People who don't know about/agree with MNS generally don't see beyond the violent protest and disruption part of things and the party is heavily condemned too. Many people also disagree with his objective itself (mostly non-Maharashtrians) often those who have already settled in Maharashtra for work/pleasure but have little interest in the local language or people or people from other states who don't see migration as a problem.

Some causes he has spoken about:

  • Potholes = Taxpayers paying multiple times for road repairs - according to him, the constructor should take responsibility that the road does not fail in quality for a certain period after it is repaired
  • Public spaces = He points out that public spaces are encroached on, while private ones aren't and suggests building fences around available spaces to discourage encroachment and bring accountability

i may be wrong but since bombay was founded by the portugese and given to the brits it's hardly fair to say it 'belongs' to the Marathi's. Bombay belongs to india, not to the people who happen to live around it. and the fact remains that there is no such thing as the 'ethnic' population of bombay so to say that he enjoys the support of the poor and yet say that he is disliked by non maharastrian immigrants seems like an oxymoron 59.178.81.194 (talk) 07:31, 11 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Extract Controversies and merge with Raj[edit]

Why not create a single Controversies page that is shared by both Raj and MNS instead of maintaining two lists in the current pages? Hcobb (talk) 10:27, 20 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Can we cool it please?[edit]

Surely there is no need for us to think of derogatory labels for Indian parties when the other parties will go on the record saying these things and all we have to do is document this with references. Hcobb (talk) 05:44, 23 October 2008 (UTC)double yo....[reply]

Book Banning[edit]

I'm looking for more details on the book banning campaign before adding it.

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Mumbai_bookstore_pulls_Pak_writers_off_its_shelves/articleshow/3932647.cms The store has taken books by Pakistani authors off its shelves following "friendly advice" from police. The store was asked to take precautions in the light of Raj Thackeray's "ban" on Pakistani artists.

MNS is a nationalist movement[edit]

And like most nationalist parties it has both socialist and fascist tendencies. Compare with Socialist Party of Serbia. Hcobb (talk) 14:26, 13 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sub.: Irritation in Railway (Ladies Compartment)

Respected Sir,

With reference to the above we are traveling in Thane to Vashi Train daily & this trains are almost after 20 to 30 minutes. In this Thane to Vashi Line there is lot of rush in all the trains. There are lot of Pick Pocketers, Hawkers (Feriwala), Sales Persons which are traveling to gather and if we don’t allow them to sit or we don’t entertained them then they abuse & fight. No kind of police protection has to be seen.

Pl. do the needful at your earliest So, it would be very safe for everybody to travel on your obligation.

Thanking You,

Yours Faithfully,

Mumbaikar.
