Cliffs in Malta

I have two questions:

  1. Sanap Cliffs in Gozo are part of Ta' Ċenċ Cliffs or this is a separate range of cliffs?
  2. I know only two major ranges of cliffs in the republic of Malta: Dingli Cliffs in Malta island and Ta' Ċenċ Cliffs in Gozo island, whether there are any other major separate range of cliffs in the republic of Malta (outside Ta' Ċenċ and Dingli Cliffs)?

Cart Ruts in Malta

Cornelius Niels Kopf

The Cart Ruts of the Maltese - not mysterious anymore There is a new and the first logical explanation for this many times discussed phenomenon: The cart ruts in Malta and on other parts of the settled world back then were sport sites and the so called “Clapham Junction”-space was the National Stadium of Malta. During competitions in this area, equal weights were pulled or pushed to a finish line on cart ruts, that were carved into rocky grounds and those ruts were sometimes changed, improved or completely renewed before a race. The weights were placed on presumably uniaxial equal carts with skids, rolls or wheels underneath. As the people of this time did not have stopwatches the whole competition had to happen at once on equally long cart routes and that explains why those curious Cart Ruts do not end at one point but run next to each other and finish wherever the competitors wanted the race to end. Another fact which offers confirmation of this theory is that next to the tracks no hoof marks from any draft animal can be found – they were only used barefoot or with light shoes by the human competitors. The inhabitants of Malta had ships and they needed strong and muscular fellow countryman who could fight in the coastal areas and fend off attacks. Presumably they would choose their leaders based on their physical conditions and their strength. There was no better way to evaluate this than sport competitions, most likely embellished with religious rituals, where men could defeat in front of an audience the opponents without hurting them, because obviously they were not enemies. In order to practice the Maltese created private training grounds and this is the reason where in some areas of Malta, Gozo, amongst others, only one or two tracks can be found next to each other. Presumably local pre-selections took place before the best people were sent to “Clapham Junction”. It is assumed that these kinds of competitions also happened at areas with a softer ground that weathered rapidly, but these routes not preserved any longer and probably proved to be a failure. Regardless if or not this slides or carts had one or two axles, the problem was for a long time that they had no dirigible or controllable axles. Hence the furrows we can see today were carved into the rocky ground so that the wheels or skids would stay on their track during the race. After the invention of steerable axles those rock rails were logically useless and even disruptive as the wheels were scratching the rails and slowed down the movement and destroyed the tracks at the same time. Consequently, those sport sites stopped being used from at least the Iron Age, as one can see at the plateau of “Clapham Junction”: Cave dwellings and gravesites were built and made the Routes unserviceable. nielskopf@gmail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.125.249.46 (talk) 12:40, 10 September 2017 (UTC)

Over-linking and over-citing

The over-linking in this article is staggering, as is the overuse of citations. I'm attempting to unlink some of the intro, but the citations need attention there, as well. At present, there are approximately 30 citations in the intro, where citations are not required in the first place! Many of those are also in the infobox, another location that should not use them. It would be helpful if others could assist in reducing some of these. —Dilidor (talk) 11:02, 18 July 2018 (UTC)

Source for /ˈmɒltə/?

I can find no source for the /ˈmɒltə/ pronunciation, either at Dictionary.com or even at Wiktionary. I have not removed the pronunciation, but I added a {{fact}} template next to it. Thing is, I can understand this pronunciation being used provisionally in accents with the cot-caught merger, but the underlying broad pronunciation would still be /ˈmɔːltə/, not /ˈmɒltə/. I don't intend to push this issue further, and will let the normal Wikipedia process happen. - Gilgamesh (talk) 02:32, 17 November 2018 (UTC)

Who appealed to Napoleon to oust the knights?!

I have just deleted the following bit from the article:

This was around the time when the universal values of freedom and liberty were incarnated by the French Revolution. People from both inside the Order and outside appealed to Napoleon Bonaparte to oust the Knights. Napoleon Bonaparte did not hesitate.

I suppose I should have first added a citation-needed template to the claim that people (who?) had appealed to Napoleon, but this just does not seem to be true, according to what I know of the subject. If I am mistaken, please re-instate the text with proper citation. Bazuz (talk) 14:09, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Include this in the article?

Daphne Caruana Galizia / Malta's PM expected to quit in crisis over journalist's murder Nardi/Reuters Malta’s prime minister, Joseph Muscat, has told associates he plans to resign imminently after the political and legal crisis stemming from the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia engulfed his government this week.

His decision follows the arrest and questioning of one of Muscat’s key allies by police investigating the 2017 murder of the prominent investigative journalist, who had exposed corruption at the highest levels of government and business circles in Malta.

After two years of stalled investigations into the murder, the authorities in the Mediterranean country have moved rapidly in recent days, with a series of arrests that have destabilised Muscat’s government. Earlier on Friday, following an unscheduled cabinet meeting that ran through the night, Muscat had vowed to stay in the job until the investigation was complete.

However, details of a split within his cabinet soon emerged. It is now understood he plans to make a televised address to announce his departure. The exact timing is to be decided, with local media saying the prime minister was waiting for news of whether the police charge a businessman suspected of ordering Caruana Galizia’s assassination. Please change the phrase ‘and fourth most densely populated sovereign country’ to ‘and fifth most densely populated sovereign country’. Breaking the Treaty of Amiens in 1803

This article must have been written by a Brit because it completely fails to mention the failure of the British to comply with the Treaty of Amiens and evacuate Malta in 1802 as required by the treaty. The British used the excuse of military necessity for violating the treaty. Funny because in 1914 they raised hell with the Germans for doing the same thing in 1914 when they invaded Belgium. Maybe I'll be find the truth in the French version of this article. 2601:700:4180:7900:D81D:67F3:911A:C2D3 (talk) 17:37, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

Length

At 16k words of readable prose, this article is too long to read and navigate comfortably. Some of the detail should be relocated to subarticles per WP:SS. Nikkimaria (talk) 14:09, 9 September 2023 (UTC)

Lots of content has already been relocated to dozens of subarticles using summary style! Even a small country is a big topic with a lot of information to cover, so naturally this will be longer than a usual article. Just being long is not inherently bad, and because the sections are well organized, it's still readable. All you've done is restated the tag, so please be more specific about article issues like identifying problematic sections, otherwise this tag at the top is too vague to be useful and will be ignored. You're welcome to move content yourself. Reywas92Talk 16:40, 9 September 2023 (UTC)
