i live in the area and am skeptical that ANYONE uses the full name in day to day contexts. the dominant newspaper (salem news) still uses "manchester", the police department answers their phone "manchester PD", high school students refer to "manchester-essex".

i understand the urge to distinguish itself from the much-larger manchester, NH, nearby but IMHO this was really just a change on paper. the only time i hear anyone affix "by-the-sea" in day to day speech, they also add "technically". as in "i live in manchester...well, manchester-by-the-sea, technically".

i think the article should be reworded to reflect that. that "most locals use..." stuff doesn't pass my BS meter. but i'll wait to hear what others think.

also...where the official name IS being used (paperwork, etc), it often appears as "manchester BTS". someone needs to add this in such a way that google picks it up -- i am stunned that "wiki manchester BTS" cannot find this page at present.

Perhaps we should set up THAT page with a redirect here? (sorry, beyond me) 209.172.25.74 (talk) 00:54, 20 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The name[edit]

Those who refer to it as Manchester-by-the-Sea occasionally call the other one—in NH—Manchester-by-the-Smell. Half a century ago that city's dump was normally on fire. Snezzy (talk) 15:51, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There was also a saying "Manchester-by-the-sea, Gloucester-by-the-smell, and Ipswich-by-the-sewer." Gloucester because of the fishing industry, and Ipswich referring to Farley Brook, an open sewer that was diverted underground in the early 1960s. 2600:4040:5D30:4800:61FA:CD6F:190E:B73A (talk) 23:11, 4 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
